MM: Fellow students who are in the same situation as me. This paper was meant to be comical, but with a hint of reality. That reality is that student debt is a big issue that I feel doesn't get looked at enough.
JB: I agree. Your brother, Alex, was sending your essay around. That's how it got to me. Did you mind? What kind of reaction has it been getting?
MM: My professor for my writing class suggested that I send it around and get it published. I posted on Facebook how it was one of the finest compliments I had ever received. My brother called me and asked to read it. He emailed me the next day letting me know he had sent it out. I've only had a few family members and friends read it, but the responses have been positive. I am very grateful that my brother sent it out and I hope that more people read it and enjoy my paper as much as the others who have read it.
JB: What do you do when you're not in class?
MM: I love hanging out with my friends and going to baseball games and concerts. We prefer to do things that don't require a lot of money, so we visit San Francisco a lot simply to sightsee. I also like to see my family, even if it is just for a short time.
JB: I know you love music; you sent me a picture of yourself playing the guitar. Are you any good at it? Or is it just for fun?
MM: That picture was taken when I went to visit a group of friends over spring break. A few of them used to be in a boy band together in high school and the bass player convinced me to try it out. I'm not very good but it was a great experience. I am always interested in trying new things. As for music in general, it is a big part of my life. I can't sing or play any instruments very well, but I love sitting outside of my school and listening to the stories the songs have to tell.
JB: It's spring and that means that the school year is almost over. What will you be doing over the summer?
MM: I work for a catering company that cooks and serves people backstage at concerts. My summer will consist mostly of work, with some downtime to see friends who have been away at school as well.
JB: Do you get to hear any of the bands you're catering for?
MM: Most of the time I do. It is important to remain professional and treat them like they are regular people, so when we do get to hear them, we cannot take photos or videos or ask any questions that would draw attention to them.
JB: That makes sense. Do you work during the school year as well?
MM: Concerts are typically on the weekends, so I am able to keep working during the school year. I always try to have early classes, because sometimes there are weekday shows and if I get out early, I can work a closing shift.
