Copyrighted Image? DMCA | A Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll indicated that far more Americans than in recent decades want to United States to be less active in global affairs. The Op-ed author indicates that the entire world order rests on a United States that is willing and able to ensure the freedom of the seas and deter would-be regional hegemons; otherwise the U.S. is careening toward foreign-policy bankruptcy. The Op-ed begs the question: Which Americans benefit the most from the U.S.'s leadership in global affairs? I submit it's the 1%, whose global financial interests are being protected, the same class who generally pay a lower tax rate than many other Americans. The U.S. needs a benefit-based tax system for funding our defense, global affairs and homeland security spending. If a benefit-based tax system is justifiable for Social Security, why not defense, global affairs, and homeland security? |
