Daniel Inouye gave the credit for inspiring the preservation of the bridge in its original serviceable beauty, to women, recognizing the role of the feminine, and its importance to peace on the planet. Inouye said, "It (rehabilitating the bridge) was an impossible task, but the ladies of Hanalei made it happen. If you want to have tranquility, if you want to have peace on Earth, then you listen to women." In refreshing deviation from other current events, he praised women for their vision and focus. Each time the bridge was in disrepair, most men involved at the time thought it was worthless to try and save it, while women stood firm to preserve the landmark. The Hanalei Bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. |
