"Regulations and consumer protections in the mortgage industry are weak, and the elderly are an opportune target for abuse among unscrupulous lenders. Higher-than-average fees and commissions for the salespeople and companies that sell reverse mortgages, also drive incentive for exploitation.

"Seniors with reverse mortgages are facing foreclosure at an alarming rate. In 2012, nearly 10 percent of homes with reverse mortgages were taken by banks through foreclosure..... About 582,000 reverse mortgages were outstanding as of November 2011"
