Should bright young Americans join the US State Department?

Howard Zinn, in recognition of the passing of Robert McNamara (the architect for the Vietnam War escalation in 1965), stated that to much is  focused on in terms of intellectual intelligience in encouraging people to decide to work in the State Department (in Defense or Homeland Security)?  Zinn advocates Moral Intelligience to be much more important and the only thing to keep Americans from repeating the previous wars, i.e. Vietnam, Iraq, Afganistan.

The best and brightest are not encouraged in the state department to focus on the tough moral questions.

Would you advise America's youth to seek work outside the State Department if they want to make a difference?

America needs idealistic and critical thinking. Consider it.
Consider only working there if you have Moral Intelligience to guide you.
Give the State Department a chance.
I don't know.
The State Department doesn' accept criticism. Don't waste effort with it.
