The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) in 2006 had a budget of about $3 billion which it used to serve about 90 million of the world's undernourished people (there are roughly 900 million of them). All of the money comes from donations (you can make a tax deductible donation online at http://www.wfp.org).

That means that with $30 billion per year, the WFP might very well be able to serve all of the world's hungry. With $100 billion per year, perhaps it could wipe out world hunger.

Why is it that instead of being a humanitarian superpower, which we are clearly capable of, we choose to be a military superpower, spending more than $600 billion per year for that purpose? If we reduced our military budget by 1/6 (which would still put us far far above any other country), we could end malnutrition in the world. That would make us more safe, because it would make us more loved.

Every bomb is a theft from a starving child.

 

My intellectual awakening is ongoing. Lately, politically, I'm most interested in efforts to break down two-party rule in this country. I registered Green after the Democrats won control of Congress. The more I think about it, the happier I am with (more...)
