In a speech in Salt Lake City on August 31 President Bush said "We have made it clear to all nations that if you harbor terrorists, you are just as guilty as the terrorists, you are an enemy of the United States, and you will be held to account."That seems pretty clear.
But wait a minute; a year ago CIA Director Porter Goss said that he had an "excellent idea" where Osama bin Laden is hiding, but that he wouldn't be caught until "weak links in the war on terrorism are strengthened." He later clarified this and said that the reason that capturing bin Laden was not feasible was because he was using "sanctuaries in sovereign nations" and when you're "dealing with sanctuaries in sovereign states, you're dealing with a problem of our sense of international obligation, fair play."
Huh? Goss is clearly talking about Pakistan. So it's "an enemy of the United States" - right? So how come they're not being "held to account?"
I feel sorry for Republicans who struggle to contrive some sort of bizarre logic to reconcile the confused messages coming from the White House and persuade themselves that the President isn't a liar or a fool.
