I was in Germany throughout the last half of the 1980s, when a teenager named Matthias Rust flew from Hamburg to Moscow and landed on Red Square. Like with 9-11 and the USA military, not a Soviet shot was fired at Rust.

From that point on, I knew that it was a miracle that the world was not getting blown up for dumb stupid reasons beyond our control.

I could not fathom those celebrating the End of the Cold War and not aware of all the newest enemies of the state who would or could run around like leaderless samurai--Ronan.

Our faith in our own military and our ability to control what happens around the globe is not only costly in terms of resources and human life, but in the end it will be useless against the darnedest folks--like the minority who elected Trump.
