What's really going on...?

In actual fact, all the big stories are in a sense 'out there' already. The information is published, but needs piecing together. 'Scoops' based on leaks, la Wikileaks , or Guardian /Glenn Greenwald are all very well, but they conceal a more subtle reality.

Investigative journalism starts not with skullduggery and secret meetings, but with the careful evaluation of  publicly available information - the sort of thing NYT op-ed writers are supposed to do (but don't). The problem is the enormous institutional biases of the media - where certain stories are not allowed to surface.
