Bush picks security aide with wiretap background to replace Townsend

Bush named a Justice Dept official with experience in terrorism wiretap programs as White House homeland security adviser. Bush chose Kenneth Wainstein, the dept's first asst AG for national security and a former FBI general counsel, to succeed Frances Townsend. Wainstein has also helped lead the admin's effort to pass new surveillance legislation that would grant legal immunity to telecommunications companies.
