Bernie Sanders won New Hampshire’s Democratic primary, edging Buttigieg in the Democrats’ presidential nominating contest after last week’s muddled results in the Iowa caucuses, according to projections by media outlets. Less than 1% of the pledged delegates to the national convention were at stake, an even smaller number than in Iowa. But the first two states typically winnow the race and define the frontrunners after voters in the small states have spent months kicking the tires on all the campaigns. “Thank you, New Hampshire,” Sanders said. “Let me take this opportunity to thank the people of New Hampshire for a great victory tonight.” Since 1972, no Democratic candidate finishing lower than second in the New Hampshire primary has gone on to win the nomination. In the last six contested Democratic primaries, New Hampshire voted for the party’s eventual nominee half the time.
