Analogy of Health Care Insurance to Ship Life Saving Equipment. Hopefully persuasive!

Below is a letter to an Editor for possible use to stimulate local conservatives to agitate their Senators to bury the House AHCA. I haven't seen my analogy elsewhere. I freely give anything in this to anyone who uses the commons of letters to editors of local papers.

Do supporters of Trump or the 217 House "Repealers" of Obamacare admit that some policies they ran on would actually harm some people? I'd like to hear straight answers about their policy to repeal Obamacare and replace it with something significantly less expensive. Yes or No? The House -- passed bill kills payments to expand Medicaid, and subsidies to the poor to buy coverage. It lets states allow insurance companies to drop some required coverages and charge older or previously afflicted people more. It is estimated that under it, 24 million insured will lose coverage and $880 billion would be cut from Medicaid.

The Senate may offer some "rube bait," a few $ billion more inserted into high risk pools claimed to soften the severity. But a solid Harvard study concluded that among two groups of citizens matched for health conditions, there are about 45,000 excess deaths per year among citizens who lacked Healthcare insurance as opposed to covered ones. Such coverage is like a ship's life preservers, from enclosed self inflatables down to water wings. You first class passengers get the inflatables, you steerage get "thoughts and prayers" and water wings. So these 217 solons of budgeting (S.O.B's) propose to trade months of relative freedom from pain and disability and life itself of poor, afflicted Americans, for cash tax savings. How is the SOB's proposal not morally perverse, not depraved?

Do you supporters of Trump or the House 217 admit that this consequence is spiteful and mean spirited? Are you spiteful, mean-spirited people content that lives other Americans be shortened?

If not, since you elected Trump and these 217 Republicans, what are you going to do about it?

I could be Bernie Sanders older brother by similarity. I was born in Manhattan, 1940, he, about a year later, in Brooklyn. I too am a white male American. A retired college professor of philosophy. We both were born of Jewish parents. I was in Harlem CORE, He in Chicago CORE. We both went to the University of Chicago; me 58 - 62, he 60 - 64 (I think.) And yet, I don't recall meeting him! U. of Chicago had plenty of progressive activists despite being a bastion of Milton Friedman. He went into politics in Vermont in '68 (?) and I settled that year into a college professorship in northwestern Pennsylvania.

I've been a long-time minor activist in the civil rights, anti-war, pro feminism movements and taught critical thinking and social philosophy. I've been a unionist, on the Board of Directors of a food co-op, an ACLU chapter president, a CASA, and an elected Green Party Borough Councilman in my small hometown. I'm happily married, for over 50 years, to a woman significantly responsible for my modest success in life. We have two great kids and one grandchild, for whom we hope there is a decent future! Recently I've been pushing Modern Monetary Theory.

Politically in 60 years I've been everything from a Libertarian in extreme youth, through socialist but now at last I just call myself a Utilitarian and Pragmatist. It avoids useless rhetorical arguments.
