On Argo and Iran
By Ross Brummet
Last night I watched Argo. While it was well made, and not as terrible, in a political sense, as it could have been. It still, more or less, painted the CIA in a fairly positive light, and Iranians as mostly a bunch of crazy maniacs. It's nice, however, to keep in mind that Iran is a gorgeous country filled with normal decent people. The following video highlights this in a way that the national war-mongering media (from MSNBC to FOX NEWS) ...
::::::::
Incidentally, like normal decent people, when their neighboring countries are occupied by an empire that is regularly threatening to invade their country. They don't always make the most advisable decision with regards to their leaders and policies. Israel and U.S. threats have the effect, in this sense, of scaring the Iranian public into supporting the most right-wing elements of their own country.
Of course those elements, that the U.S. and Israel push the Iranian public into supporting aren't quite as crazy as the U.S. media claims them to be. Iran never has, for instance, called for Israel to be wiped off the map. Something that has been regularly reported for almost 10 years, but which now even the Israeli deputy prime minister calls bullshit.
P.S. The following article does a good job explaining how Argo functions as propaganda, despite the possible good intentions of Affleck.
Ross Brummet is a student and writer in Los Angeles. Considering himself a utilitarian with libertarian socialist sympathies, he is fond of the views of Howard Zinn, Noam Chomsky, and Peter Singer. However he finds Kurt Vonnegut and Douglas Adams more amusing.
