The Relation Beetween News And Advertisement In Turkish Media

By cumhur ozkaya

Turkish media started a revolution about 20 years ago. Establishment of private TV channels was first step of this change. And private news channels started broadcasting, 6 years later. The source of both revolutions was advertisement companies.

Turkish people are interested in every event. They need to escape from their personal issues and all these security events, political discussions, football, basketball matches, and famous people’s lives that provide that shelter. When they hear about an accident, they start clicking on news portals; if the event is so complex they need to read some articles on the next day. They watch discussions on TV for hours. They even search for books to learn more about the background and all the related details of that case. Books are published in a few weeks and you are really surprised how much they are read.

Turkey’s geographical position is becoming important because of Turkey’s deep concern about current events. Turkish people think they live in a very dangerous region, being neighbors with Iraq, Iran and Syria.

They have focused on membership of EU. This process offers hope of high life standard for some, but EU is a dangerous organization for some others.

Until the first Turkish news channel NTV was established about 13 years ago, people were content with TRT and other channels. TRT and other channels news programs were only 1 or 2 hours in total.  CNN's Türk and some others followed NTV.

Turkish news channels starting point is to increase daytime audiences for advertisement.  Before the establishment of news channels, only female audiences used to watch TV in the daytime and accordingly advertisers could not reach the male audience during the day.  But now advertisers can introduce their products all day thanks to the power of news channels today.

Not only advertisement incomes but also the density of listings is a reason for the establishment of Turkish news channels. About 13 years ago the breaking news of very important events couldn’t reach the majority during the daytime, but the daily news is so plentiful that it can now be shared by a lot of channels.

Due to its crowded population (70 million) Turkish daily news can be shared by all these channels. Turkish population is available for sport, economy, art, music, local, and fashion news - and all of these channels can be watched in Turkey now. Advertising companies who want to reach the audience can choose from any of these channels.
