Eric Holder's stand on DNA opens the door for Don Siegelman
By Marilyn Noyes
Eric Holder makes justice a priority in remarks about Supreme Court DNA decision. Next step is justice for Don Siegelman.
::::::::
In addressing the 34th Annual D.C. Courts’ Judicial Conference in Washington yesterday, Eric Holder distinguished himself with his comments about the Supreme Court’s recent 5-4 decision which would deny convicted prisoners a right to clear themselves using DNA collected at the time their cases took place.Holder said, “…we are mindful that DNA evidence can be used to exonerate those who are wrongfully charged. Our mission at the Justice Department is not simply to win cases. It is to do justice, and science and DNA can help us accomplish this.”This statement by Mr. Holder is an indication that our new Attorney General is not locked into the rigid, short-sighted rules of an obsolete past and that he is willing to mete out REAL JUSTICE through his department.I appreciate AG Holder’s enlightened position and ask that he do for Don Siegelman what he would do for an accused rapist who didn't commit the crime. Look at Governor Siegelman's case and the tainted prosecution, and at the very least, make Judge Mark Fuller recuse himself and grant governor Siegelman a new trial. At best, see the case for what it was, an unsubstantiated political hit to bring down a strong, ethical Democrat, and therefore drop the case entirely against Governor Siegelman. It's a leg up for us who are working for Governor Siegelman's exoneration. Eric Holder has elevated himself to the moral high ground on the DNA issue. That’s right where we need him to be to free Don Siegelman. The moral high ground. (202) 514-2001; fax: (202) 307-6777; AskDOJ@usdoj.gov
