Our judiciary is different than yours. It is not elected.  It is allowed an arm’s length relationship from government. I say, without equivocation, that our judiciary, with a few minor exceptions, is wise and fair.  When I served as a refugee tribunal member, I read the decisions of our courts as one might read a newspaper or magazine, they were so well-argued and judicious. Canadian caselaw is consulted in many other jurisdictions. In my opinion, America has a great deal to learn from the Canadian judiciary.

Our police remain largely uncorrupted. Yes, like all countries, we are affected by a slide into fascism. Just as the world’s markets and financial institutions have revealed the extent to which they have patterned themselves on those of America, so do a small number of our police follow your example. But I feel no division within myself when I use the word “decent” and extend it to the vast majority of Canada's police. (And, yes, I am aware of exceptions.) 

We love our universal medicare.  We do not want you to undermine it by coming into Canada and opening up public/private projects that trigger NAFTA and threaten to kill our universal-medicare system. My American friends, hear me:  I am fully covered in the event of illness – please know that.  I do not pay hundreds of dollars a month for my medical coverage. I do not live in fear of losing my home if I get ill.  There is no shame in universal medicare. We as a country are affording it. It is not “socialism.” Stop being afraid of being labelled a "socialist" if you support universal medicare.  It is the manifestation of a caring society.

No matter how far we may remain from it at this time, our country has taken up Prime Minister Trudeau’s challenge to build a “just society.”  In some areas, such as our obligation to First Nations, we have much work to do, mature, courageous work, not simply buying someone off. 

But, for the most part, we labour together to produce a society in which, by law and civil right, all cultures can co-exist, equal opportunity is extended to women as well as men, and all religions are respected and none demonized (especially not Islam, falsely made the scapegoat for 9/11).

Our citizens do not, except for hunters, bear arms.  Canadians have shown by their example that they respect the law (please hear me: respect the law) and, when they do not, they work through legal means to change it. Can you say the same of yourselves as a contemporary society? If not, why not?

A wave of devastating neoconservatism has swept through the United States in the last fifty years and has brought in governments that are capable of blowing up their own citizens (9/11,  Oklahoma City, the I35 Bridge collapse, the U.S.S. Liberty), raining barium and depleted uranium down on them in chemtrails in the name of depopulation (you must hear that I am serious in saying this), coveting their Social-Security funds, refusing them universal medicare, corrupting the American Congress, making murderous war on the citizens of other countries, and dozens of other sad circumstances which, I'm afraid, will enter into the record of your history.

We in Canada do not want truck or trade with this neoconservative coalition – with your Trilateral Commission or Council on Foreign Relations, with your Project for a New American Century or with any of your outrageous councilors from Henry Kissinger to Zbigniew Brzezinski. We do not want your brand of predatory capitalism, with its worthless commercial paper, speculative debt, and cutthroat practices.  

In trade negotiations, we look upon America as an 800-lb gorilla. Your negotiators act like the town bully – and you should know this of yourself – threatening, perpetually offering your partners in trade the short end of the stick, lowering their living standards, robbing them of their resources.

We don’t want NAFTA, in which your goods come into Canada freely but some ground is found to keep our goods out.  We are not here to be part of your hinterland. We are an independent country, “the true North strong and free.” and wish to remain so. We wish to deal with you fairly, as your respected partner.

The tragedy of America today is shared by the world because once the world looked up to America (and we will look up to you again).  But right now you have your own house to put in order. Do not export your corruption and murderous cabals to our countries. Cease interfering with Canada and the rest of the world. Draw back within your own borders and come to your senses.  Let your next president address these matters and begin your imperative need to heal.

Tell me that you have heard me. Tell me that you see that we are not simply a land of igloos and snowshoes, as you imagine.  Tell me that you know that we are an independent and viable sociopolitical entity whose government may just run better than yours (do I hear any one of you taking issue today with what I have just said?), whose judiciary works better than yours, and whose police are more honest than yours.  You would do well to investigate how it is that our fully independent and viable country runs as well as it does and give up ideas of taking us over.
