WOULD YOU BE FOR IMPEACHMENT IF...?

By Jay Farrington

All this adds up to one thing: George W. Bush, President for Life. Believe it or not, there would still be that bedrock twenty per cent of Bush lovers who would say it was just fine if their Clown Prince stayed on.

::::::::

With BushCheney’s approval rating in the teens, it would be informative to take a poll asking how many Americans would back Impeachment. It might be a majority, perhaps, but not enough to get Congress to act.

Despite growing pressure from the public to impeach Cheney and Bush, Congressional leaders who must take action to get it done continue to resist. Below is a list of reasons (excuses) for taking this position, even though in their hearts, they would love to impeach.

REASONS FOR NOT IMPEACHING

IT IS TOO LATE—Congress couldn’t get it done now even if it wanted to. Bush only has one year left in office. Not enough time.

WRONG LEADERSHIP—Reid and Pelosi are not the leaders needed at this moment in history, which is putting it charitably.

TOO DIVISIVE--It would divide the nation, humiliate us in the world’s view, and really serve no purpose. It is more important to heal the partisan divide.

There are other reasons. All are reasonable. Taken together, they provide enough reasonable doubt to make inaction the course of action.

REASONS FOR IMPEACHMENT NOW

IT IS THE ONLY WAY to neutralize the Neocon poison that has leached into every level of government

IT IS THE ONLY WAY to reverse the downward spiral of our nation

IT IS THE ONLY WAY to regain our moral leadership in the world

IT IS THE ONLY WAY to hold BushCheney accountable for their depredations against America.

Not compelling enough reasons?

Would it galvanize the move to Impeach if we learned that Bush has no plan to leave office?

When I suggested to my brother, with whom I agree on nearly everything, that Bush might declare a national emergency and suspend elections, he began to seriously doubt my sanity.

“He couldn’t get by with it,” he said, no doubt stating most people’s response.

“Who would stop him?” I argued, “He’s violated the Constitution like a cheap tart; he’s taken executive powers that don’t exist; he’s done things nobody would have believed, and he is still in charge.” Before I knew it, I was on a rant.

My brother changed the subject. I don’t blame him. It is not pleasant to think about, whether it’s another crackpot conspiracy theory or a sickening glimpse of reality.

If it were to happen, when all was said and done, a lot more would be said than done.

BUT IT WOULD BE TOO LATE; IT WOULD BE OVER BEFORE IT STARTED

With terms ending for a plurality in Congress and the election suspended, Bush would have his Majority of One to fight the Constitutional crisis.

Would the Demos stand up? Would Repubs hang with their guy? How would Bush’s Department of Justice come down, and if it gets that far, any guesses as to how Bush’s Supreme Court would resolve it?

The answer is another question: How did each of these entities respond to previous power struggles?

Demos have folded like a cheap suitcase, Repubs would follow Bush to Hell and take the country along; Department of Justice is Bush Country and as for the Supreme Court—they were created for just this moment by the Republican Right.

All this adds up to one thing: George W. Bush, President for Life. Believe it or not, there would still be that bedrock twenty per cent of Bush lovers who would say it was just fine if their Clown Prince stayed on.

Despite the popular legend of Paul Revere, we are not a people who can be warned of coming danger to much effect. Think of the people’s response if Paul’s warning had been, “The British might be coming!”

BEST REASON TO IMPEACH

Call it a “Pre-emptive Impeachment,” because there is an imminent threat against our nation from this regime.

They swore to defend and protect the Constitution—they have dismembered it.

So, Go ahead and Impeach, if nothing else, just as insurance that the current Squatters in the White House don’t decide to stay, and just to make sure they can’t keep using that “piece of paper” we call the Constitution the way Rednecks use an old Sears catalog. ***
