Getting Ready for the Big Game

By Kevin Gosztola

I can't stop thinking about the big game coming up between the Giants and the Patriots. That is, the Giants of Corporate America and the Establishment for the Preservation of the Status Quo and the Patriots who will put their neck on the line and maybe even risk losing their seat in office for the people when called upon to do so.

I can’t stop thinking about the big game coming up between the Giants and the Patriots. That is, the Giants of Corporate America and the Establishment for the Preservation of the Status Quo and the Patriots who will put their neck on the line and maybe even risk losing their seat in office for the people when called upon to do so.

I’ve been thinking about this showdown since Dennis Kucinich officially withdrew from the presidential race on Friday. Around that same time, he kept saying he would be introducing articles of impeachment for Bush on Monday. If you haven't figured it out, I will be rooting for the Patriots.

When I heard that Dennis was going to be introducing the articles of impeachment for Bush, I knew I would be tuning into C-SPAN on Monday to catch the big event.

I went out and got drinks and food to sit down with and enjoy the mayhem that will ensue on Capitol Hill as the Giants led by Nancy Pelosi face off with the Patriots led by Dennis Kucinich.

I think the Giants are favored to win, but if the wind is blowing in the right direction, the Patriots might have a shot at gaining some momentum at some point in the showdown. If they are still hanging tough halfway through the fight, than they may have a chance to pull off an upset in our nation’s capital on Monday.

The Giants have clearly shown they will not go easy:

Nancy Pelosi, leader of the Giants, said impeachment was off the table in May of 2006 before Congress came under control of the Democrats. More than one and a half years later, she holds firmly to that position.

John Conyers of the Giants seconded Pelosi’s position after the 2006 election: "In this campaign, there was an orchestrated right-wing effort to distort my position on impeachment," Conyers said in a statement released by his Judiciary Committee spokesman. "The incoming speaker (Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.) has said that impeachment is off the table. I am in total agreement with her on this issue: Impeachment is off the table."

Howard Dean, DNC leader of the Giants, was not in favor of impeachment since May when he was being interviewed by Norah O’Donnell on Hardball:

O'DONNELL:  If Democrats win in the midterm elections in November, will the Democrats in Congress move to impeach this president?

DEAN:  I doubt it.  It's possible.  I mean, no doubt, there will be investigations because there's been so much corruption in the White House and the vice president's office, even the Republican Senate president is under investigation for insider trading.  The Republican House leader had to resign.  The new Republican House leader just killed all the ethics legislation.

It's pretty much of a culture of corruption on the Republican side in Washington now, and I think you're certainly going to see some investigations.

The Democrats believe that we need to do something about jobs, we need to fix our security or especially our port security.  We want honesty and openness back in our government, so we want to have real ethics reform.  That's a big list of important things.

You know, unless there's a terrible smoking gun, I think impeachment is going to come pretty low on the list, because we have got to really turn this country around and that is a big job.

Other members of the Giants like Steny Hoyer, whose job is to bend over and hike the ball to Pelosi, have said: “This administration has approximately 12 months to 14 months to go. We have some major priorities. We believe that we need to pursue those policies and focus on those policies.”

The Giants have the backing of the presidential candidates campaigning for so-called change.

Barack Obama has said, "I think you reserve impeachment for grave, grave breaches, and intentional breaches of the president's authority,” and goes on to say, “I believe if we began impeachment proceedings we will be engulfed in more of the politics that has made Washington dysfunction. We would once again, rather than attending to the people's business, be engaged in a tit-for-tat, back-and-forth, non-stop circus."

Hillary Clinton has avoided the matter for the most part. One can only imagine that when asked about impeachment she said, “I don’t support it because of what I saw impeachment do to my husband when he was in office.”

John Edwards said in this video in August 2007 that he understands the feeling people have who support impeachment but would rather focus on getting the right nominee in office---me.

In lieu of the fact that the candidates have chosen to root for the Giants, they have divided the support for impeachment by making some who supported impeachment feel electing them is instead the answer.

The Patriots have a smaller team than the Giants but one thing they have going for them that the Giants do not have is a passion for what they are fighting for, which is why I would not say they will lose yet. They also have strategized more than the other side. The Giants are only playing because the Patriots issued a challenge.

The Patriots team consists of Dennis Kucinich, the leader, and Tammy Baldwin, Luis Gutierrez, and Robert Wexler, who all will be a force to be reckoned with for John Conyers and Nancy Pelosi before Monday is over.

Other members include Rep. Robert Brady [D-PA], Rep. Yvette Clarke [D-NY], Rep. William Clay [D-MO], Rep. Steve Cohen [D-TN], Rep. Danny Davis [D-IL], Rep. Keith Ellison [D-MN], Rep. Sam Farr [D-CA], Rep. Bob Filner [D-CA], Rep. Raul Grijalva [D-AZ], Rep. Sheila Jackson-Lee [D-TX], Rep. Henry Johnson [D-GA], Rep. Carolyn Kilpatrick [D-MI], Rep. Barbara Lee [D-CA], Rep. James McDermott [D-WA], Rep. James Moran [D-VA], Rep. Donald Payne [D-NJ], Rep. Janice Schakowsky [D-IL], Rep. Edolphus Towns [D-NY], Rep. Maxine Waters [D-CA], Rep. Diane Watson [D-CA], Rep. Lynn Woolsey [D-CA], Rep. Albert Wynn [D-MD]

And Congressman Mike Michaud, a conservative and Blue Dog Democrat from Maine sent a letter over the holiday break to House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers calling for impeachment hearings of Vice President Dick Cheney. He takes the  position that representatives likes Wexler have, which is that hearings for impeachment are necessary to determine if impeachment should occur. (All cosponsors presumably would already have no problem voting for impeachment.)

The Patriots team has grown from 3 to between 25 and 30 since May 2007. They have a lot of momentum going into this showdown despite the unlikelihood of achieving victory.

While the Patriots team has unified themselves for the impeachment of Cheney, it is expected they will do the same and unify for the impeachment of Bush.

Further reports conclude that a band of Rethuglicans might streak across the field halfway through crying out about how preposterous this is and saying they want the Democrats to debate it so they have to stand up and take a stand for or against what has caused the Patriots and Giants to clash. Nobody knows how valid that report may be but one thing is for sure: This won't be your grammy's or granddaddy's impeachment showdown.

The countdown to kickoff begins now with this video by Robert Greenwald:

H. Res. 333 (now H. Res. 799) otherwise known as the Impeachment of Cheney
