Chronology of a Second 9/11

By Steve Beckow

The article provides a chronology of recent events that suggest that the Bush administration is planning a second 9/11, war with Iran, and the ending of democratic government in America.

::::::::

Rumors are circulating on the Internet that a second 9/11 is expected between September 14 and 21, 2007.

If it occurs, I profoundly hope that America won't be "fooled twice." Instead, I hope the American people rise up against this second massacre and join in a general strike.

I hope the many military men and women who respect the Constitution and oppose this administration will remove the administration from office.

Let the People choose a new government with no thoughts of a foolish war on Iran, one that will end the unjust war in Iraq and bring the criminals in the administration to justice for their acts of mass murder and high treason.

To help us understand what events have led us to fear a second 9/11, I offer this partial chronology.

Many events are missing, the most obvious being the executive orders the President has signed and recent legislation passed. I must leave these topics to others for lack of time.

February 2007.
Commondreams reports that Admiral William Fallon, President George W. Bush’s nominee to head Central Command (CENTCOM), expressed strong opposition in February to an administration plan to increase the number of carrier strike groups in the Persian Gulf from two to three and vowed privately there would be no war against Iran as long as he was chief of CENTCOM. Fallon’s resistance to the proposed deployment of a third aircraft carrier is credited with shifting the Bush administration’s Iran policy in February and March away from increased military threats and toward diplomatic engagement with Iran.

A source who met privately with Fallon around the time of his confirmation hearing and who insists on anonymity quoted Fallon as saying that an attack on Iran “will not happen on my watch”.

Asked how he could be sure, Fallon is reported to have replied, “You know what choices I have. I’m a professional.” Fallon said that he was not alone, according to the source, adding, “There are several of us trying to put the crazies back in the box.”  (1)

1 Feb. 2007.
Zbigniew Brzezinski warns the Senate Foreign Relations Committee of ongoing machinations designed to produce war with Iran and more: “A plausible scenario for a military collision with Iran involves Iraqi failure to meet the benchmarks, followed by accusations of Iranian responsibility for the failure; then by some provocation in Iraq or a terrorist act in the US blamed on Iran; culminating in a ‘defensive’ US action against Iran that plunges a lonely America into a spreading and deepening quagmire eventually ranging across Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan.” Over the past half year, events have followed Brzezinski’s scenario closely. (2) (My emphasis.)

25 Feb. 2007.
The London Sunday Times reports that some of America’s most senior military commanders are prepared to resign if the White House orders a military strike against Iran, according to highly placed defence and intelligence sources.  The newspaper learned that up to five generals and admirals are willing to resign rather than approve what they consider would be a reckless attack. … A source with close ties to British intelligence is reported to have said: “There is simply no stomach for it in the Pentagon, and a lot of people question whether such an attack would be effective or even possible.”

A British defense source confirmed that there were deep misgivings inside the Pentagon about a military strike. “All the generals are perfectly clear that they don’t have the military capacity to take Iran on in any meaningful fashion. Nobody wants to do it and it would be a matter of conscience for them.

“There are enough people who feel this would be an error of judgment too far for there to be resignations.”

A generals’ revolt on such a scale would be unprecedented, the Sunday Times said. “American generals usually stay and fight until they get fired,” added a
Pentagon source. Robert Gates, the Defense Secretary, has repeatedly warned against striking Iran and is believed to represent the view of his senior commanders.

One retired general who participated in the “generals’ revolt” against Donald Rumsfeld’s handling of the Iraq war said he hoped his former colleagues would resign in the event of an order to attack. (3)

25 Feb. 2007.
In the same article, the Sunday Times quotes General Peter Pace, chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, as saying that there was “zero chance” of a war with Iran. He played down claims by US intelligence that the Iranian government was responsible for supplying insurgents in Iraq with sophisticated roadside bombs, forcing Bush on the defensive over some of the allegations.

Pace’s view was backed up by British intelligence officials who said the extent of the Iranian government’s involvement in activities inside Iraq by a small number of Revolutionary Guards was “far from clear”.

Hillary Mann, the National Security Council’s main Iran expert until 2004, said Pace’s repudiation of the administration’s claims was a sign of grave discontent at the top.

“He is a very serious and a very loyal soldier,” she said. “It is extraordinary for him to have made these comments publicly, and it suggests there are serious problems between the White House, the National Security Council and the Pentagon.” (4)

[Ed. In this connection it may be well to remember some of Gen. Pace’s other pronouncements, as gathered together and published in a 2006 article.]

It is the absolute responsibility of everybody in uniform to disobey an order that is either illegal or immoral. …

[Soldiers] will be held accountable for the decisions they make. So they should in fact not obey the illegal and immoral orders to use weapons of mass destruction. …

I believe that a lot of the commanders, in fact, do recognize that they do have a free choice in [the matter of the use of WMDs], that they should not execute orders that are illegal and immoral, such as any order to use any kind of a weapon of mass destruction. …

[Though they are normally obliged to carry out an order of their superior] they can still not commit crimes against humanity. They can still not execute any kinds of orders that might tell them to use weapons of mass destruction. …

[Though their decisions may affect their careers,] they still have very clear choices to make, and their choices will have major impact, both on the troops who look to them for leadership right now and on their own personal fate when this is all over. (5)

25 February 2007
Global Research quotes Vice-President Cheney remarking that he “understood … the Democrats in the US were riding public opposition to the war that could end up prejudicing their leadership credentials [but] the mood could easily shift if there was another terrorist attack.”  (6)

23 March 2007.
9/11 Truth activist Webster Tarpley comments that “an incident involving 15 British Royal Navy and Royal Marines personnel who were taken into custody by the Iranians … was a part of Cheney’s winter-spring war drive, which peaked with two US B-1 bombers deliberately violating Iranian airspace over the city of Abadan in oil-rich Khuzestan province on March 31. This crisis was defused by a mobilization of persons of good will around the world, with Russian President Putin and the RIA-Novosti news agency playing a critical role. In particular, a pointed March 28 warning from Putin to Bush about attacking Iran created enough uncertainty in Washington about how Moscow might respond to nuclear aggression against Iran so that cooler heads than Cheney’s prevailed.”  (7)

10 April 2006.
Three retired generals call for Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld’s resignation.  The New York Times interviews former operations director of the Joint Chief of Staff, Marine Lt. Gen. Greg Newbold (ret). Justifying their defiance of the administration, Gen. Newbold warns that a leader's responsibility "is to give voice to those who can't - or don't have the opportunity to – speak."

"Enlisted members of the armed forces swear their oath to those appointed over them; an officer swears an oath not to a person but to the Constitution. The distinction is important."

The article adds that his generation of officers thought it had learned from Vietnam that "we must never again stand by quietly while those ignorant of and casual about war lead us into another one and then mismanage the conduct of it," General Newbold wrote. (8)

April 13, 2007
. The New York Times reported that the number of retired generals calling for Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld to retire had reached five (it would eventually reach six).  (9)

13 April 2007.
TBR News says that Pentagon reports point to an exploding rate of desertions and a very strong possibility of mutiny among troops.  (10)

15 April 2007.
Vice-President Dick Cheney tells NBC's Tim Russert on Meet the Press that the greatest threat now to America is “a 9/11 occurring with a group of terrorists armed not with airline tickets and box cutters, but with a nuclear weapon in the middle of one of our own cities.”  (11)

16 April 2006.
Writing in the Washington Post, former Ambassador to the United Nations, Richard Holbrooke, alleges that the now-six retired generals who demanded Rumsfeld’s resignation were speaking for many of their colleagues.  Holbrooke reminds his readers that Gen. Newbold said he spoke out with “the encouragement of some still in positions of military leadership.” (12)

1 June 2007.
A longstanding Texan friend is alleged to have called on George Bush recently and confided to his Washington hosts that Mr. Bush had said three times, bringing a clenched fist to his chest, "I'm the president." Reminding visiting political opponents of this might be normal, but the close friend said he was a taken aback a bit as he had never before seen Mr. Bush in this mode.

Capital Hill Blue
editorialized that “what these close friends see is a madman on the edge, a delusional paranoid whose brain is fried by too many years of hard drinking and probably too much cocaine up his nose.”  (13)

[Note: As background to the last allegations, see the following:

17 Nov. 2005.
Internet journalist Tom Flocco reports that Secret Service members attached to White House domestic security, FBI agents, CIA agents, and written national security field reports say that President Bush has been using drugs which could be affecting his performance as the nation’s war-time commander-in-chief.

Multiple federal agents having direct knowledge and access to Bush’s medical records say the President has switched from using Ritalin to taking Prozac while also succumbing to periodic alcoholic binges which have led to tirades and explosive personal conduct among White House aides….

Federal law enforcement agents have at different times witnessed President Bush doing lines of cocaine in the early morning hours at the White House and drinking straight shots of whiskey in the evening hours. (14)

3 June 2007
. Dennis Milligan, Chairman of the Arkansas Republican Party, is quoted as commenting: "I believe fully the president is doing the right thing, and I think all we need is some attacks on American soil like we had on [Sept. 11, 2001]."  (15)

1 July 2007.
ABC News reports that "a secret U.S. law enforcement report, prepared for the Department of Homeland Security, warns that al Qaeda is planning a terror ‘spectacular’ this summer." (16)

10 July 2007.
Webster Tarpley reports that Homeland Security Director Michael Chertoff said on July 10 that the U.S. faces a danger of attack in the summer of 2007 and that his warning is based on a “gut feeling.” (17)

16 July 2007.
The Manchester Guardian reports that the Cheney war party had again gained the upper hand in the secret councils of the Bush White House, pushing aside the purported hesitations of Condaleeza Rice, Secretary Gates, and the NATO allies to chart a direct course towards war with Iran. (18)

16 July 2007.
The same article reports that, “a few days ago, a group of lawyers from western Massachusetts met with local congressman, Democrat John Olver. Their request was that Olver take part in the urgent effort to impeach Bush and Cheney. Olver responded by saying that he had no intention of doing anything to support impeachment. He went further, offering the information that the United States would soon attack Iran, and that these hostilities would be followed by the imposition of a martial law regime here.” (19)

16 July 2007.
Paul Craig Roberts, former Assistant Secretary of the Treasury, quotes right-wing writer and radio show host William Norman Grigg saying recently that the GOP is "praying for a terrorist strike" to save the party from electoral wipeout in 2008. (20)

17 July 2007.
The Bush administration releases an unclassified summary of its National Intelligence Estimate, which claims the US is facing a “heightened threat environment” for terrorist attacks because Al Qaeda has found a safe haven in Pakistan’s tribal areas, from where it can plot such attacks. The Bush administration seizes upon the report, ominously entitled The Terrorist Threat to the Homeland, as a pretext for possible military intervention in Pakistan and a justification for its war policy in Iraq as well as further domestic surveillance measures at home. (21)

19 July 2007.
Paul Craig Roberts warns: “This is a wake-up call that we are about to experience another 9/11-WMD experience.”  (22)

"The administration … and prominent Republican propagandists ... are preparing us for another 9/11 event or series of events," he was quoted elsewhere as saying. “You have to count on the fact that if al Qaeda's not going to do it, it's going to be orchestrated. ... The Republicans are praying for another 9/11." (23)

20 July 2007.
Representative Peter DeFazio (D-OR), a member of the House Committee on the Homeland Security Committee, is denied access to documents relating to plans on how to conduct government after a terrorist attack.

Rep. DeFazio expresses shock. "I just can't believe they're going to deny a member of Congress the right of reviewing how they plan to conduct the government of the United States after a significant terrorist attack," DeFazio says.

"Maybe the people who think there's a conspiracy out there are right," DeFazio said.  (24)

20 July 2007
.  Paul Craig Roberts warns that Bush has the Republican Party in such a mess that it “cannot survive without another 9/11.” He adds that "whether authentic or orchestrated, an attack will activate Bush's new executive orders [NSPD-51], which create a dictatorial police state in event of national emergency."

He predicts that the UK government is hand-in-glove with the Bush administration and will provide cover or verification for whatever claim the Bush administration advances. He warns that the right-wing governments in Canada and Australia will as well. “That takes care of the English-speaking world from which contrary explanations might reach the American people.” (25)

23 July 2007.
Webster Tarpley calls the Democrats complicit in any future Cheney war crimes: “That leaves us with Brzezinski’s third scenario point: a terrorist act in the US blamed on Iran. What Brzezinski is talking about here is high treason, insurrection , genocide, high crimes against humanity under US law and the Nuremberg Code. Why has [Brzezinski] not been called upon to tell all he knows about this sinister plot, so obviously operating through the Cheney-Addington office, and through Eliot Abrams at the White House? Because the Democrats who heard that warning – Senators Biden, Dodd, and Obama on the committee, plus Hillary Clinton – have done nothing to raise a hue and cry, hold hearings, issue subpoenas, demand documents, or begin impeachment hearings against those involved. The Democratic Party must therefore be seen as fully complicit under the Nuremberg Code in any future crimes by Cheney regarding a wider war in the Middle East.” (26)

23 July 2007.
In the same article, Tarpley reports that Lt. Col. Doug Delaney, chairman of the war studies program at Royal Military College, Kingston, Canada, observes: “It may well be that the key to bolstering Western resolve is another terrorist attack like 9/11 or the London transit bombings of two years ago, he says. “If nothing happens, it will be harder still to say this [sending of Canadian troops to Afghanistan] is necessary."  (27)

23 July 2007.
In that article too, Tarpley calls for a nationwide general strike: “The desperate demagogues of the Republican Party are facing a hecatomb at the polls in November 2008. Their idea seems to be that of the fascist Prime Minister Aznar of Spain in March 2004: if you are sure to lose an election, stage a terror attack, declare martial law, and perpetuate your power that way. Aznar was stopped by a general strike of about one third of the entire Spanish people. If all else fails, would Americans be capable of a mass strike against war and dictatorship? We may soon find out.” (28)

24 July 2004.
President Bush gives a speech at a South Carolina air force base where he insists that the withdrawal of American troops from Iraq will result in terrorist attacks on the US.  He repeats the claim that US troops in Iraq are “fighting bin Laden’s Al Qaeda.”  (29)

24 July 2007.
Air Force General Victor Renuart, who heads NORTHCOM, established by the Bush administration to oversee military operations within the US, tells Associated Press that the American military needs to triple its domestic military forces to counter the growing threat from Al Qaeda, which, he claims, is actively preparing another terrorist attack in the US. “I believe there are cells in the United States, or at least people who aspire to create cells in the United States,” Renuart says.

He calls the National Intelligence Estimate a “summary of drumbeats.” Asked if he is concerned about an attack in the US this summer, he replies, “I have to be concerned that it could happen any day.”  (30)  [Ed. Note that NORTHCOM would be in charge of domestic security if martial law is declared and that NORAD and NORTHCOM occupy the same offices.]

30 July 2007.
Global Research reports that, in the past few days, television news broadcasts have prominently featured a recent alert issued by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), warning federal air marshals and other law enforcement agencies to look out for terrorists practicing to carry explosive components onto aircraft. Security officers were instructed to keep any eye out for “ordinary items that look like improvised explosive device components,” because they might be used to test airport security. (31)

31 July 2007.
Capt. Eric H. May reveals that people in the Portland, Oregon, area are worried that they may be the victims of the next 9/11, a “false-flag” nuclear attack during Operation Noble Resolve.  (33)

3 Aug. 2007.
According to Jim Fetzer of Scholars for 9/11 Truth, Capitol Hill Blue reported a confidential memo circulating among senior Republicans suggesting "that a new attack by terrorists on U.S. soil could reverse the sagging fortunes of President George W. Bush as well as the GOP and 'restore his image as a leader of the American people'."  (34)

6 August 2006.
Republican Rick Santorum is quoted as saying that "between now and November, a lot of things are going to happen, and I believe that by this time next year, the American public's going to have a very different view of this war." (35)

6 Aug. 2007.
Paul Craig Roberts warns that “the American constitutional system is near to being overthrown.” (36)

13 Aug. 2007.
Col. Donn de Grand-Pre, U.S. Army (retired), tells 9/11 Truth activist and radio talk show host Alex Jones that “there's a definite cleavage between the military of the Pentagon and the civilian hierarchy - and never the twain shall meet. … I can verify that from Col. Dick Schultz, who is a friend of mine in the Joint Chiefs. Morale was not only low but he said some of the troops are ready to mutiny. If it wasn't for the fact that the government, the civilian hierarchy, has control over retirements, there would probably be blood in the streets by now.” (37)

30 Aug. 2007.
According to Jim Fetzer, members of the 1st Battalion, 265th Air Defense Artillery, are being deployed from Florida to the nation’s capital for a year’s duty, “where they will operate high-tech weapons systems against any potential air threat.” “I am not aware of any threat from the sky to the White House,” says Fetzer. “Is this to protect Bush and Cheney from foreign terrorists or are they concerned that US citizens may rise up in opposition to their suspension of the Constitution”? (38)

30 Aug. 2007.
The same article reports that the control of the National Guard has been placed directly at the disposal of the President of the United States over the opposition of all fifty governors. (39)

30 August 2007.
The article also alleges that police departments across the country are being starved of ammunition.  “Most police ammunition is .38 and 9mm caliber, not the kind that our military requires. The profit margin on the sale and manufacture of bullets is so great and the demand is so strong that it is difficult to imagine how this could happen absent a deliberate policy to curtail access to ammo. Without bullets, those vast stocks of weapons are useless. This appears to be a very clever, insidious plan.” (40)

30 Aug. 2007.
Fetzer reports that “Blackwater, USA, the private security contractor that has assembled a large mercenary force in Iraq (as part of a governmental privatization scheme to keep the official count of American forces involved artificially low) is now building its own air force in the United States, including the purchase of Super Tucano light combat aircraft from Embraer, a Brazilian company. According to the article, it has one new private military base in San Diego, another in Mount Carroll, IL, and has applied for operating licenses in every coastal U.S. state.” (41)

30 Aug. 2007.
Six nuclear warheads are "accidentally" shipped by B-52 from Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota to Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana. Five arrive, suggesting that one has been “lost” enroute.  The flight violates military procedure, which requires that nuclear weapons always be shipped on the ground in the continental US, so that if there's an accident, a bomb detonation won't occur. It would take an order from the Commander-in-Chief to put nukes on a plane. The rumors were that the plane was meant to hit 5 American cities with nuclear weapons over Labor Day weekend in order to install martial law.  (42)

5 Sept. 2007.
Repubican Congressman Paul Gillmor of Ohio is found dead in his home, allegedly from a heart attack. But word later leaks out that he had blunt trauma to the head and neck.  The story is consequently changed to him falling down the stairs.  No investigation is planned.  A member of the House Finance Committee, Gillmor was investigating a series of suspicious option trades. Someone appeared to be betting billions of dollars that the market would fall 50% by September 21st. (43)  [Ed. This scenario occurred before the events of 9/11 as well.]

7 Sept. 2007
OpEdNews reports that “informed speculation that the movement of the nuclear weapons to Barksdale was leaked because the air force base is a staging area for deployment to the Middle East. The Pentagon recently drew up plans to hit 1200 targets inside Iran in a massive bombardment campaign aimed at destroying its military and overthrowing its government. The movement of the nuclear weapons may have been an alert to the public by disgruntled members of the military that such plans would include the pre-emptive use of nuclear weapons.”  (44)

11 September 2004.
Reports circulate on the Internet that the entire Air Force will stand down on September 14th, for overhaul and review of procedures.  The last stand-down, unannounced ahead of time, took place on Sept 11, 2001. Questions are raised about whether a second 9/11 is planned for Sept. 14. (45)

13 Sept. 2007.
World News Daily reports that NORAD and National Guard fighters will defend the nation during the stand-down.  (46)  [Ed. Readers will recall that NORAD put up no effective defense against the alleged hijackers on 9/11 and that the National Guard has recently been placed under President Bush’s control.]

13 Sept. 2007.
The same news report states that the stand-down on Sept. 14 was ordered by Gen. Ronald Keys to conduct a command-wide review of operations, safety procedures and checklists after the Aug. 30 incident at Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota, according to the Air Force Times.

It reported that, at Minot, six cruse missiles with nuclear warheads were loaded onto a B-52H and flown to Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana – without the bomber crew or ground command realizing nuclear weapons were on the aircraft. (47) It does not mention the fate of the sixth missile.

13 Sept. 2007
. World News Daily also reports “Bush administration plans to utilize USNORTHCOM as a U.S. military command to direct the operations of troops deployed in a wide range of continental North American emergencies, including health epidemics, natural disasters, terrorist events and even domestic violence or civil disorder.”  (48)

13 Sept. 2007. MichaelMoore.com reports that Vice-President Cheney is expected to spend Sept. 14 at the CENTCOM, U.S. Central Command, in Tampa, FL. (49)

 * * *

I leave the last word to Jim Fetzer of Scholars for 9/11 Truth.

“If you believe in coincidence, then perhaps you consider it to be a remarkable [one] that, just as the American military is being weakened in Iraq, the National Guard is being placed under the President’s direct control, and that ammunition is being cut off from police departments and armed citizens, while air defense units are being deployed to Washington, D.C., and mercenaries [i.e., Blackwater] are developing their own air force. I’m not so sure. If we have the most capable air force in the world, then why is this one needed? To do things our own air force would not do? All of these developments are troubling and lead me to think that the Kennebunkport Warning [of a second 9/11, a strike on Iran, and the imposition of martial law] may be even better founded than its signers realize.”  (50)
