The U.S. Attorney General, Mr. Alberto Gonzales, testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee today. The subject was the firing of U.S. Federal Prosecutors. But really, the hearing was set to evaluate the AGs credibility, honest and integrity.

I first came to Washington DC in 1972. I have been in many, many hearings and listened to hundreds more on the radio.

You have to go back to the Watergate hearings, I think, to find examples of more clumsy and inarticulate testimony. And you have to go back to Watergate to recall someone who testified to a tougher, “Going after him,” panel.

How can one describe the tone of the AGs testimony? Cornered rat. Treed racoon. Dead meat.

How can one describe the tone of the Senators? I cannot take credit for this because Rob Kall said it fist but it is “spot on:” Carving up the carcass.

If the AG doesn’t resign, someone in the President’s staff should drag some tar and feathers into the Oval Office.

"The moment I believe I can no longer be effective I will resign as attorney general," Gonzales said after first making it clear he did not believe it had come to that.

"The best way to put this behind us is your resignation," Sen. Tom Coburn, the Oklahoma Republican.

The AG probably didn’t do anything illegal. But he sure did a lot of things that were stupid.

The issue for the Senators is this: have we lost trust and confidence in this AG?

The answer will undoubtedly be a resounding yes.
