Message to Ann Coulter: When will you apologize?
By Mary MacElveen
Ann, it is about time that you apologize to the 9/11 widows, the victims of Darfur, the people of Baghdad, Anna Nicole Smith's daughter and yes the Rutgers women's basket ball team since you used this tragic case by interjecting what other names could have been used against them.
::::::::
In her column “Ho, Ho, Ho, Merry Imus”, I do not care for Ann Coulter’s lecturing to the American people what she has to say of Don Imus. She should be the one to talk when it comes to hateful things said of others in which she has never apologized for a single utterance coming from her pie-hole.
How dare she lecture Imus when she said, “Imus should apologize to the Rutgers women — and those women alone — send them flowers, and stop kissing Al Sharpton's ring.”
Given today’s environment any celebrity is forced to issue an apology over and over to our own self-satisfaction. We must be damn sure that this person is indeed sorry for the utterances coming out of their mouth. Call it voyeurism if you will. We get our thrill so to speak out of the self-debasement of these individuals. It makes us feel superior is my guess. We puff out our chests thinking we are the moral superiors. One is reminded of that age old saying, “Those in glass houses should not throw stones.”
Yes, Ann, Imus did indeed travel to the Governor’s mansion in New Jersey to hold a private meeting with these admiral young ladies who were deserving of this apology. After being mortally wounded through the firings coming from NBC, MSNBC and CBS, he did apologize.
In her column she writes, “The reason people don't like what Imus said was because the women on the Rutgers basketball team aren't engaged in public discourse. They're not public figures, they don't have a forum, they aren't trying to influence public policy.” Coulter goes onto say that they, “did nothing to bring on an attack on their looks or character.” The same thing can be said of those women who lost their husbands in the Twin Towers on 9/11.
This is what Coulter had to say of those 9/11 widows, “These broads are millionaires, lionized on TV and in articles about them, reveling in their status as celebrities and stalked by griefparrazies. I have never seen people enjoying their husband’s death so much.” in her book, “Godless: The Church of Liberalism” She stated in an interview with the Today Show’s host, Matt Lauer that one is “not allowed to respond” to victims such as these women. These women suffered loss that she cannot even imagine. In her blasting of these women, she did respond.
Yet, Ann Coulter has never issued any apology to these women. Exactly what right does she have to lecture Don Imus? She doesn’t have any right to even enter this debate in light of rants that have come from her. She has never been subjected to endless on-air appearances issuing any form of apology, yet she feels she can lecture America on this? She will never know the pain of these women and the children involved. That emotion is lost to her. In fact, I am beginning to think that any human emotion is lost to her with the exception of hate.
I find it astounding and beyond comprehension that she can drag the late Anna Nicole Smith into this dialogue when she included in her column, “(And if he called Anna Nicole Smith a "flaxen-headed ho," it would be "absolutely accurate.")” The woman is dead and cannot even answer back to this column, Ann. Why pick on a dead woman and will you ever apologize to the seven-month baby daughter DannieLynn? After all, this baby will never truly know her mother. Picking on a dead woman shows just how low Ann Coulter will go. In Smith’s short life she did use the power of her celebrity to work on behalf of PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals); what has Ann done to better the human race as well as vulnerable animals?
Coulter also interjects her own words into this column to describe the women on the Rutgers basket ball team when she said, “Now, if Imus had called the basketball players "fat, race-baiting black men with clownish hairstyles," well, then perhaps Sharpton would be owed an apology.” Why add anymore derogatory terms to this incident, Ann. This is where I feel that Coulter is akin to a hyena picking over the bones of a carcass. In this column, she is offering none of us any positive solutions to this debate, but adding salt to a festering wound. Perhaps, Ann Coulter should apologize to them as well. They do not need anymore names thrown at them. No she used this one event to promote herself. Come on, Ann, apologize. I dare you.
I feel an apology towards the victims of Darfur is long overdue when Coulter said, "We've been hearing about this slaughter in Darfur forever -- and they still haven't finished. The aggressors are moving like termites across that country. It's like genocide by committee. Who's running this holocaust in Darfur, FEMA?" As Imus traveled to New Jersey to meet with those he offended, so should Coulter. She should personally go over to Darfur and say to those she offended, I am sorry.
Coulter once equated Baghdad with Los Angeles and I would say she owes every single citizen left in that city an apology for using that comparison when the Red Cross the other day reported, “Hospitals were stretched to the limit by daily mass casualties, malnutrition was on the rise and power shortages were becoming more frequent around the country, the relief agency said.” She knows nothing of the pain they have gone through and continue to go through.
As I touched upon Anna Nicole Smith’s work with PETA, while Imus has been brought down in front of the entire country, let us not lose sight of these works on behalf of American children by him and his wife Deirdre. The charitable works by Imus will overshadow the work done on behalf of sick children at his ranch. In that article one reads that both he and his wife Diedre, dedicate “their entire summer to hosting eight one-week sessions at the 4,000-acre cattle ranch for children who have had cancer or blood disorders, or have lost a sibling to sudden infant death syndrome. But make no mistake: this is no frolicking summer camp or serene high-desert day spa. The Imus Ranch is an exhausting, sunrise-to-sunset boot camp for cowboys and cowgirls designed to instill the values of hard work and the Western lifestyle.”
I have also read this news article which came out this morning concerning a radio-thon to help these children. The news article reports, “The show's charity fundraiser had raised more than $1.3 million Thursday before Imus learned he had lost his job. The total had grown Friday to more than $2.3 million for Tomorrows Children's Fund, CJ Foundation for SIDS and the Imus Ranch, Deirdre Imus said. The annual event has raised more than $40 million since 1990.” It then goes onto say, "This may be our last radiothon, so we need to raise about $100 million," Don Imus had cracked at the start of the event…Volunteers were getting about 200 more pledges per hour Thursday than they did last year, with most callers expressing support for Imus, said phone bank supervisor Tony Gonzalez. The event benefited Tomorrows Children's Fund, the CJ Foundation for SIDS and the Imus Ranch.” Part of his penance in his firings will be what more he could have done for this organization had he not uttered those words.
All of which leads me to ask of Coulter exactly what charities has she helped over these years. In doing a Yahoo search and a Google search, I could not find any. As Imus has issued his apologies, none have been forth coming from Coulter towards the long list of folks she has targeted throughout the years.
Ann, it is about time that you apologize to the 9/11 widows, the victims of Darfur, the people of Baghdad, Anna Nicole Smith’s daughter and yes the Rutgers women’s basket ball team since you used this tragic case by interjecting what other names could have been used against them.
Lastly, until any apology is forth coming from Ann Coulter it is my opinion that she does not have the right to add anything further to this debate. Just go away, Ann and leave the rest of America alone. Let us figure out how we can best address this issue without hearing from you.
