How to Help the Ukrainians?

By Carmine Gorga, Ph.D.

A plea to United Nations to protect the water supply of Ukrainians cities and towns.

::::::::

The Russian aggression in Ukraine is so otherworldly that it seems unreal. But no, people are dying. People are suffering horribly.

Do you see the face of children on your TV screen?

So, my problem is not to remain passive. My question is what can I do, so I will not bitterly regret my lack of action one day?

I am too old to go to fight with my Ukrainian brothers and sisters. Eliminating the other obvious answers, such as sending support money or writing bitter harangues against Mr. Putin, yesterday I woke up with one useful idea.

Somehow, hearing that Mr. Putin is ready to shut the water supply of cities and town to bring the Ukrainians to his knees, I was horrified. Think of it, Ukrainians dying gasping for a drop of water.

Then a counterproposal came to mind.

The idea is to ask the United Nations to intervene to protect the water supply of all Ukrainian cities and towns.

This solution will not solve all problems, but it will reduce the amount of pain and sufferance Ukrainians are going through.

Who knows? Prolonging their resistance, the world might come up with a better, more lasting solution.

***

We are perhaps wise not to provoke Mr. Putin to use his nuclear arsenal in retaliation for the creation of a "no flight" zone.

There are people who believe Mr. Putin might be truly tempted to use such an extreme measure.

And perhaps we should never use our nuclear arsenal under any situation.

But then the question arises: Why have nuclear arms at all?

***

So, what can we do?

If the United Nations intervene, Mr. Putin will not be justified or tempted to escalate his nefarious efforts.

The United Nations can quickly establish a cordon of people - armed or not - to surround and protect the water supply of all Ukrainian cities and towns.

So, this is my plea:

I expressed this plea in a Tweet yesterday. But my followers are evidently few and far between. Would the readers of OpEdNews help make this plea a reality? Will they bring this simple idea to the ear of the powers-that-be?

Time is short.

Thank you for your consideration of this idea.
