Jack Truman, the Democratic candidate for U.S. Congress in SW Missouri, discusses the job his opponent Roy Blunt is doing in protecting America's children.
::::::::
Our children have to come first.
Before Politics.
Before Terror.
Before our own safety.
Children are our future. They need to be protected. At all costs.
Let's talk a little bit about what's happened these few weeks:
Everywhere you look, the news has been about our children not being protected.
With the Foley scandal.
With the multiple school shootings.
With the public education system.
With the danger of childhood obesity.
The public is demanding our children's safety. And what has our current government been doing about it?
Nothing.
The facts are proving that our current government in Washington has known about teenage pages being abused by Mark Foley for up to 10 years. My opponent, Roy Blunt, has been one of the top 3 Republicans in Congress this entire 10 years. Mark Foley worked under Roy Blunt. The facts are speaking for themself.
School violence is skyrocketing. As a country, we thought after Columbine, this would never happen again. It's 10 years later. Republicans have controlled Washington this entire time, and have had 10 years to get something done. My opponent, incumbent Roy Blunt, has been one of the top 3 Republicans in Congress these past 10 years.
And are our schools safer?
No.
In the past 3 weeks, there have been 4 school shootings across the country. In Colorado. The Amish tragedy. And most recently, yesterday, here in our district's backyard in Joplin, Missouri, when a 13 year old walked into his middle school with an assault rifle and opened fire.
Our public education system is a mess. Our children are not being protected in their best interests. Look at No Child Left Behind. School Vouchers. School Privatization. Our public education system is getting worse. And the Republicans have had over 10 years of control in Washington.
Childhood Obesity is a growing epidemic. The statistics are alarming. 1 out of every 5 children are considered obese. In low income families, 40% of children are considered obese. 2 out of every 3 Americans are obese. In a country where health and nutrition are a growing concern, massive changes need to be made to protect our children's health.
The Republican Party has had the chance for over 10 years to make our country better. To make our children safer. My opponent, incumbent Roy Blunt, has been a top head of this Congress for over 10 years. And Americans are fed up.
It's time to clean house. And the majority of Americans are demanding it.
That is why my top campaign priority is protecting our children. Period. Before anything else. If I am elected by SW Missourians on November 7th, my first priority will be ensuring our children's safety. Before anything else.
And what about my opponent, Roy Blunt? Well...I think the last 10 years speak for themself.
The American public is outraged. They want a change. And it's beginning to show.
Today, CNN and USA today released a national report that shows 75% of Americans disapprove of the job our current Congress is doing. That same poll shows that 2 out of 3 Americans support a Democratic controlled Congress. And over half of Americans believe that there was a deliberate cover-up with our current Congress to hide the Foley affair.
Americans want change. They want to clean house.
But what about here? In Southwest Missouri? In my opponent, incumbent Majority Whip Roy Blunt's district?
Voters have no idea they have a choice for change.
With less than 4 weeks to go until Election Day, as the Democratic candidate for U.S. Congress in SW Missouri, to date, I have received no help at all from my party. None. None from the state's Democratic party. None from Washington.
Why?
With less than 4 weeks to go until Election Day, the local press in our district has refused to list the name of Roy Blunt's opponent in local news stories.
Why?
Southwest Missouri voters are not getting a chance to know they have a choice for change.
I know the press does not want to seem partial; but doesn't the public deserve to know they have a choice? And the name of that choice is Truman?
Personally, I think the values of SW Missourians reflect the way the majority of Americans feel. I think people around here are fed up, and want a change. But if SW Missourians do not know they have a choice for change, how can change happen?
I truly believe that if voters here in Southwest Missouri saw the name Truman beside Blunt in the press, that would cince it. No question. And I think my opponent, Roy Blunt, and the local press in this conservative district know that. There is no way, in these times, a Truman would lose in Missouri.
The people deserve to know. Here's what we can do:
Contact the Democratic party. In the State of Missouri. In Washington. Call the news stations in SW Missouri. Write the press in SW Missouri. And demand to find out who is running against Roy Blunt.
Demand it.
If we work together, and demand change, it will happen.
Truman vs. Blunt. I think the name speaks for itself.
Our children deserve better.
