Some Extraordinary Resources

I'm not thinking about which character in A Night To Remember I want to be, as the deck tilts and the lights flicker. I'm thinking about a possible future in which we follow the excellent advice of Tolu Oni [click here] who lays out some major social-political-environmental aspects of our problems concisely, and provides the view that these problems are not as intractable as they appear.

Naomi Klein has a very good piece here now [A High-Tech Coronavirus Dystopia]. She is spot-on. If you're new to what she's talking about, read Professor Zuboff''s 2" tome, The Age of Surveillance Capitalism. This whole field is about something that's almost invisible, but so is a virus, and it ain't no urban legend.

A shift to sanity is possible and probably happening already. As Klein and Zuboff make clear, however, we have become intimately connected to a system run by an extractive industry that fracks us like oil and gas.

The fracking salts are bots and trolls and memes that isolate us into tiny markets-of-one, and and feed us imagery that slowly papers the walls of our little worlds. From there, we try to hold elections.

This has worked to big tech's unimaginable profit, and our great detriment, unfortunately, but has gone about as far as the Masters of the Universe could take it. Their next project must be drastically restrained, and they have almost got it flying. But this is not Marvel Comics.

The power went down today where I live. It was a wake-up call. These systems are vital to our survival now, and should not be in private hands.

I'm an old Pogo fan. For some unknown reason I persist in outrage at Feudalism, as if human beings can do much better than this. Our old ways of life are obsolete and are killing us. Will the human race wake up in time? Stay tuned...
