Requiem for the nuclear free world

By Lukas Ramonas

This week was remembered for a remarkable date. So, 50 years ago the US and the USSR ratified The Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, commonly known as the Non-Proliferation Treaty or NPT. This document on strategic stability has reliably kept the peace for a long time. Experts call the date a "sad anniversary" and believe that many points of the agreement are not implemented.

What is the reason?

As you know, the key clause of the agreement was the obligation for nuclear states not to transfer nuclear weapons and materials to third parties. At the same time, the agreement also secured the right of states to be engaged in peaceful nuclear research and exchange of scientific and technical information with each other.

However, the treaty, what was supposed to lay the foundations of peace and stability, was repeatedly violated by the United States.

Unfortunately, the US transferred nuclear weapons to military bases in Europe instead of limiting the spread of it. This fact poses an immediate threat to Russia, which does not have its own military bases in other countries.

So, nuclear weapons, which can be used against Russia, are located at air bases in NATO countries. Moreover, these bases are formally listed as allies, but are actually actively operated by the US. American nuclear bombs are stored at air bases in Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands and Italy.

It is useful to note that more than one generation of activists came to protest against American troop's presence in European countries over the last 75 years. The question of the further deployment of nuclear bombs in Europe was raised in Germany and Belgium.

At the same time, the US constantly talks about Russian threat while deploying the troops in Europe. They are actively supported by Poland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.

As you can see, the United States continues the Cold War against Russia nowadays. Washington does not accept the fact that someone is trying to compete with it at the international arena. That is why the US uses European countries which can be sacrificed in the event of a conflict with Moscow, to strengthen its dominance.

It is sad to admit, but nobody cares about the opinion of ordinary Europeans who do not want to become the victims of a nuclear war between the United States and Russia.
