North Korea, Bolton, Pompeo, and the Rapture

By Ray McGovern

The CrossTalk discussion on DMZ diplomacy and possible next steps addressed the main substantive points, as well as the obstacles like the already too-long tenure of John Bolton and Mike Pompeo.

I was invited to appear on Wednesday, in the wake of my Sunday commentary on the Trump-Kim DMZ meeting. See here.

Moderator Peter Lavelle noted my dishevelled appearance, which is a sign of solidarity with my friend, publisher Julian Assange, whose beard was so prominent in the photos of him being unceremoniously dragged out of the Ecuadorian embassy in London marking the illegal end to his political asylum. (My earlier piece on the "Julian Assange Beard," JAB, movement got lots of "looks" but no joiners.)

The CrossTalk discussion on DMZ diplomacy and possible next steps addressed the main substantive points, as well as the obstacles like the already too-long tenure of John Bolton and Mike Pompeo.

Bolton, who was exiled to Mongolia lest he play skunk at the DMZ Sunday picnic, should be looking for another job.

Pompeo, too, is at risk. Posted on my website are my comments on a highly interesting (linked) recent NY Times article by well plugged-in journalists, who rang several changes on that theme. (See The Last Days of Pompeii-o.)

Also available to President Trump is the VIPS June 21 MEMORANDUM, warning him that, in some demonstrable respects, Pompeo's agenda seems not to be the same as Trump's. (See here.)

The CrossTalk mulling over of the almost 70-year Korean conundrum, especially the still formidable obstacles to real progress, weighed so heavy that I injected a lighter note with a frivolously hopeful throwaway line: "Pompeo has been told there is a weight limit on the Rapture."

Use your imagination: Were this to be true, the immediate danger of Pompeo's bringing on Armageddon to hasten the Rapture would recede.

As for the longer term, Pompeo would still be in a bind. Surely, he would not want to miss being "lifted up," while most of the rest of us are "left behind." But, if he slimmed down enough to meet the Rapture weight requirement, he would fear ending up in Mongolia like Bolton.

What merit Trump sees in Pompeo remains unclear. What does seem clear is that, like Shakespeare's Caesar, the President likes to keep some "men about him who are fat."

In contrast, "bureaucratic Tapeworm" Bolton (hat-tip to Tucker Carlson), "has a lean and hungry look; he thinks too much: such men are dangerous. By all indications, Bolton would not mind being "left behind," so long as he could continue to linger in the intestines of neocons and other susceptible parts of the body politic.

As the Germans put it, "Ein bisschen Spass darf sein," or, It's OK to have a little fun even with these weighty issues.
