Trump Set to Complete NAFTA as Rich Liberals Applaud

By David Weiner

Trumps migrant deportation plan fulfills Clinton's goals for NAFTA

::::::::

Progressive-plus myself, I periodically interact with wealthy liberals. All hate Trump, but many also deplore Sanders, Ocasio-Cortez and other "extreme socialists". Many feel sorry for young people of color, and consider white young people too coddled. They don't respond to my suggestion that mis-educating and mis-socializing our young may occur with purpose. They decry autocracy but favor a "realistic" amount of rational elitism. My probing this idea triggers even more anger than when I do the same in conversations with wealthy republican conservatives.

The President's treatment of migrant children elicits horror, with a "but": Mexicans might want to look for opportunities at home and stop seeking the gold at the end of our Rainbow. I jump on this and wonder how they view Nafta, a policy formulated under Nixon but nailed down by Clinton. Didn't NAFTA just shift the virtual enslavement of Mexicans by U.S. companies from their U.S. premises to locations in Mexico? Wasn't this in more effective, efficient service of greed? And weren't members of the Mexican ruling class complicit in this, still delivering the goods to El Norte as usual? My conversationalists find NAFTA to be sound policy and view my description of it as conspiracy theory.

If the massive deportation of undocumented latinex workers scheduled for today has been delayed, it will almost certainly not be canceled. It seems poised to enhance a goal openly favored by wealthy conservatives, and tacitly by most rich liberals for decades: White, North American working people must get over their expectations of easy luxury and learn to work for a living. Jobs emptied of "illegals" will now be available. Unemployment will go down, homelessness will paradoxically go up, and the economy will "prosper." How Trump goes about getting this done is of course deplorable! But the goal itself they fully embrace.
