Toxicological Profile for Glyphosate from California Alternatives to Pesticides
Bringing information you can use for action about herbicides, pesticides and other toxic chemicals in northern California and around our shared worldChemical Formulation & Use Profile
Glyphosate, known as "Roundup" is the isopropylamine salt of N-(phosphonomethyl) glycine. It is a non-selective post-emergence herbicide for controlling weeds in agriculture (cropped and non cropped), forestry, rights-of-way and aquatic systems. It is distributed as water-soluble concentrates and powders, one of the most often used pesticides worldwide. Glyphosate disrupts plant growth and causes death by inhibiting amino acid synthesis.
Human Health Risk Summary
Acute Effects: Some formulations of glyphosate have been shown to cause extreme irritation of the skin and eyes, such as blurred vision, burning eyes, rashes and skin blisters. Other symptoms reported following acute exposures, include: nausea, sore throat, dizziness, gastrointestinal and respiratory tract injuries.Chronic Effects: Carcinogenicity: Though evidence that glyphosate causes cancer is yet to be established, several animal and human epidemiological studies have indicated a potential correlation. In these studies, there was an indication that glyphosate may increase the risk of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, multiple myeloma, pancreatic, thyroid and testicular cancers.
Reproductive & Developmental Toxicity: Glyphosate exposure has been associated with several manifestations of reproductive and development impairment in both animals and humans. In animal studies, high dose or prolonged exposures have resulted in skeletal malformations, disrupted organ development, and reduced sperm volume and quality. In human epidemiological studies, exposure to glyphosate has been connected to an increased rate of miscarriage, reduction in sex hormone production, and disruptions to endocrine system development.
Mutagenicity: Several studies on both animals and humans have suggested that exposure to glyphosate can cause chromosomal aberrations, DNA breaks, and other genetic mutations.Ecological Hazard Summary
Environmental Fate: Glyphosate bonds strongly to soil particles, and will not generally leach from terrestrial systems to aquatic environments. However, it may be translocated to surface water from drift following aerial application or from movement of soil particles by wind, erosion, or storm runoff; and, has been frequently been detected in surface water nation-wide.
Glyphosate is moderately to highly persistent with a half life of approximately 60 days in soil, though depending on soil conditions, it may persist for at least six months. In aquatic environments, its half-life is expected to be from several weeks to several months.
Risk to Non-Target Flora & Fauna: Because of drift from inappropriate application methods, as well as offsite movement from wind and rain, glyphosate poses a considerable risk to non-target plant and animal species. Studies have shown that a significant amount of spray applications drift off-site (from 14% to 78%). It has been documented to affect plants 130 feet away, and residues have been detected up to 1,300 feet downwind., Glyphosate has been shown to disrupt the immune systems and cause genetic abnormalities in fish., Similarly, it has been shown to cause genetic, developmental and reproductive mutations in amphibians.Toxicity of Inert Ingredients
Commercial glyphosate products (such as Roundup) are composed of an active ingredient (approximately 40% of the solution) and other ingredients (approximately 60% of the solution). Some of these "surfactants" or "adjuvants" include: polyethoxylated tallowamine (POEA), isopropylamine, and diethanolamide. Each of these compounds has been shown to exhibit toxicity at much higher levels than glyphosate alone. For example, POEA has been shown to be three times as acutely toxic to humans as glyphosate alone. One surfactant commonly used in Rodeo (similar to Roundup) was found to be 100 times more toxic to aquatic invertebrates than glyphosate alone. Other inert ingredients have been shown to be genotoxic, carcinogenic, teratogenic and disruptive to reproductive function in both humans and animals.,,,
Summary
Glyphosate and commercially available products containing this compound are of particular concern to human health and the environment, due to: 1) some evidence of carcinogenicity, reproductive/developmental toxicity, endocrine system toxicity, and genetic toxicity to humans; 2) potential adverse effects to non-target plant and animal species due to overspray, drift, and translocation; and 3) the potentially severe impact of many of its additives such as POEA, which have been identified as extremely hazardous to both humans and animals

Monsanto has a long history of manufacturing toxic chemicals, some of
which are now banned. Their first creations were artificial vanilla (vanillin) and the artificial sweetener saccharin. Among the first of the products they manufactured to be banned was PCBs, which were
federally banned from production in 1970.
One of their most, and perhaps famous products to be banned was DDT.
DDT which had many negative health effects on people, was banned by the federal government in 1972 for causing a massive decline in the bald eagle population.
This guide to Roundup exposure covers everything from how to use
Roundup safely, round ups health effects, the symptoms of Roundup
exposure, what you can do about it and some of Monsanto's lawsuits.
Though everyone in the US is exposed to Roundup many times a year,
there are a few groups of people who are most at risk for Roundup
exposure. Who is most at risk for Roundup Exposure?
Professional Gardeners
Landscapers
Farmers
Agricultural Workers
Herbicide Applicators
Groundskeepers
Roundup Exposure occurs in 3 ways:
Breathing in Glyphosate through nose or mouth
Eating food treated, or tainted with Glyphosate
Absorbing Glyphosate through skin
Monsanto produces genetically modified seeds, almost 90% of corn,
canola, and soy are genetically modified. Many of their newest seeds were modified to be "Roundup Ready". These Roundup ready crops are specifically designed to survive heavy applications of Roundup. If you consume any products from of the major brands (i.e. Kellogs, Oreos, Lays), you are most likely exposing yourself to Roundup.
What Are the Signs and Symptoms of Roundup Exposure?
There are a lot of suspected symptoms which are caused by Roundup. Side effects can range from stomach issues, to cancer, and many more in between. Only a physician can diagnose disease, so do your own research and start a dialogue with your physician.
According to Jeffrey Smith, Author of Genetic Roulette The Documented Health Risks of Genetically Engineered Food:
""Symptoms of exposure to glyphosate include eye irritation, burning
eyes, blurred vision, skin rashes, burning or itchy skin, nausea, sore throat, asthma and difficulty breathing, headache, lethargy, nose
bleeds, and dizziness. Glyphosate and glyphosate-containing herbicides caused genetic damage in laboratory tests with human cells, as well as in tests with laboratory animals."
Though it has long been speculated by many people, glyphosate has only recently been recognized as a probable human carcinogen. This recognition was proposed by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2017
1. Roundup and Gut Bacteria
Just as glyphosate blocks the shikimate pathway in
plants, it disrupts a similar pathway in humans. Though shikimic acid is unique to plants and not produced in humans, glyphosate interrupts the functions of several amino acids and enzymes. One of these
enzymes, cytochrome P450, is crucial for proper gut function. This enzyme is produced by the gut microbiome, and is absolutely necessary for helping the body detoxify from xenobiotics, and environmental toxins. Over the long term, this inhibition of the cytochrome P450 can lead to a range of diseases, most commonly perhaps is celiac disease. Gut health is one of the most important aspects to maintaining a healthy body. Recently coined the "second brain" by Dr. Michael D. Gershon's, it has been found that the gut is directly
linked to the brain, and cognitive well being.
2. Roundup Mimics Estrogen
Like many synthetic chemicals present in our modern environment, glyphosate is known to mimic estrogen. This makes glyphosate an endocrine disruptor. Other endocrine disrupters include DDT, atrazine, BPA, and many phyto-estrogens such as those found in soy.
The largest side effects causes by glyphosate as an estrogen mimicker
are seen at the higher doses a lawn care professional or groundskeeper might be expected to be exposed to. It is critical to remember that we are exposed to a wide range of endocrine disruptors already. At all costs avoid endocrine disruptors.
Estrogen mimickers are known to cause a wide range of disease in both men and women including:
Cognitive issues
Reproductive problems
Weight gain in men
Hormonal imbalances
Cancers (especially breast)
3. Glyphosate is a Xenobiotic
Glyphosate is defined as a Xenobiotic, meaning its a synthetic chemical, and is foreign to your body. Because your body is unfamiliar with the chemical it has a stress response. Stress can cause a range of responses from your immune system. One of these responses is inflammation, and chronic inflammation, along with other stress responses, can lead to cancer.
Roundup and Lymphoma
Lymphoma is a a type of cancer that begins in the cells of the bodies immune system. Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is the most commonly associated cancer linked to glyphosate. This is the side effect has lead to the nearly 9,300 lawsuits against Monsanto, including the one for Mr. Johnson in California.
Early in June of 2018,the first day in court of Dewayne Johnson was heard. Johnson, who is 43 years of age, was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma after a bad rash began to cover his body. Johnson was a school
groundskeeper that regularly used Roundup.
In August of 2018 he was awarded a massive settlement, concluding:
"The jury ruling that Monsanto's weedkiller was a substantial contributing factor in causing DeWayne "Lee" Johnson's cancer. (From US Right To Know; Monsanto Papers)
Cancers Linked to Roundup Exposure
One of the many diseases that appear to be linked to Roundup is cancer. Most specifically Lymphoma, but other cancers as well. Many of the cancer risks appear to be linked to glyphosates negative impacts as a xenobiotic, but more research must be conducted.
In Argentina it was found that within a decade of glyphosate and genetically modified plants being introduced to the country, childhood cancer rates tripled. The same study also noted increases in birth defects, and other disease which appeared to coincide with the
introduction of glyphosate.
Aside from WHO's recognition of glyphosate as a "probable carcinogen", or probable cause of cancer, the WHO's International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) also concluded that glyphosate is a genotoxic, meaning it damages genes. The study went on to conclude that with increased exposure, malignant tumors were found to increase at multiple sites in laboratory animals, namely the liver and kidneys.
Additional Studies Linking the Carcinogenic Effects of Glyphosate
Additionally, those that are exposed to high levels of glyphosate, such as the individuals in the Who is most at risk section, may be increasing their risks for breast cancer. Several studies have found that glyphosate can act as an estrogen, which means it mimics estrogen a female sex hormone. Increased levels of estrogen are linked to a wide range of diseases, among them is cancer.
Other Diseases Caused By Glyphosate
There are many other diseases which may be associated with glyphosate. Though more research is needed, there is some evidence that suggests that Roundup use may lead to ALS, Depression, Parkinsons, Heart disease and more.
Should you Seek Legal Counsel for Roundup Exposure?
If you or someone you have known has been exposed to Roundup on a regular basis, and have an illness which has been previously linked to glyphosate exposure, speak with an attorney; there are now many attorneys experienced with Roundup exposure cases. There are many attorneys will review your claim free of charge, and let you know if you have a case of not. Some of them will even act as your attorney pro-bono and only charge a fee once you win the case.
We are poised to see a barrage of litigation continue against Monsanto for the health effects of Roundup. If you have been chronically exposed to Roundup, and you feel that you have a disease which may be linked to this exposure, don't hesitate to consult your physician and a lawyer. Protect Yourself From Roundup Exposure
The negative effects of Roundup are not typically short term. Though some people may have an immediate allergic reaction, most of the alleged diseases caused by roundup happen slowly with chronic long term use.
Pesticide and herbicide runoff is a source of many forms of pollution. Glyphosate, and many other pesticides like Atrazine are wreaking havoc on many water sources across the nation.
Pesticide runoff can contaminate surrounding streams and even groundwater supplies. Though this is mostly a concern on industrial level farms, it can still have an impact in your community if herbicides are too commonly used.
Its not just fertilizers, and animal waste that lead to algea blooms. The mass die off of plants sprayed by herbicide may also contribute to algea blooms the same way as fertilizer.
This is caused by the rapid decay and release of the nutrients held in the plants which died.
Once you have finally applied the herbicide, it is important to wait before letting pets or children in the treated area. Until glyphosate is completely dried, it can still contaminate anyone that is exposed to it.
You can avoid glyphosate all together and opt for a safe alternative. In our Eco-Friendly Lawn Care Guide, we listed several weed killing alternatives. Easily the coolest of them are the weed killing flame throwers made by Red Dragon.
It doesn't stop there. Other alternatives include Summer Set All Down, several products by Bonide and others.
One great effective recipe I learned about earlier in the year is this:
1 Gallon distilled white vinegar (5%)
1 cup Epsom salt
1/2 cup Dish soap
Simply mix all the ingredients together in a sprayer, and spray on the weeds. I have found this recipe to be effective on driveways and walkways. The soap works to spread the vinegar and salt across the entire surface of the plant. Once the plant is covered it becomes dehydrated and dies.
The most obvious of all alternatives to herbicides is old fashion weeding: there is no more effective or healthy way to get rid of those annoying unwanted weeds than hand weeding.
As if the health, and environmental risks laid out in this extensive guide to Roundup exposure wasn't enough, glyphosate losses effectiveness over time. This means that more needs to be used to get the same effects, as certain plants become immune. Because of this glyphosate tolerant crops are genetically modified to withstand heavier and heavier applications of glyphosate.
As long as glyphosate is the most used herbicide, our exposure to glyphosate will only increase with time. This of course is good for Monsanto's bottom line, but becomes increasingly harmful to our health.
What's the Bottom Line on Roundup Exposure
Your body has been designed to handle a wide range of natural toxins, but synthetic substances are different. The cells of your body are known recognize xenobiotics as foreign, and this can cause a reaction with your body as if it were an infection.
This constant, chronic exposure can cause a range of diseases and allergic reactions. We currently are aware of several diseases which glyphosate appears to cause, but many more are likely yet to be found.
Though small amounts of glyphosate are likely safe, nothing is safe about the chronic exposure many of us endure on a daily basis, especially those in agriculture and lawn care. It is absolutely critical that we are aware of our environment, and respond accordingly. That starts with becoming informed and sharing information.

DNA Project/ Detoxify
oxproject.org/glyphosate/dna-damage/
SummaryDNA damage in humans can result in cancer, reproductive problems, infertility in men, birth defects in offspring, and decreased lifespan. The pesticide industry claims that glyphosate does not damage DNA. However, glyphosate and glyphosate herbicides have been found to damage DNA in animal studies, as well as in human cells tested in vitro (not in living humans). Genetic damage has been found in soybean workers exposed to agrochemicals including glyphosate herbicides, as well as in Ecuadorian people exposed only to glyphosate herbicides.
Under European law, pesticides that damage DNA (are "genotoxic") are not allowed to be marketed.
The "Glyphosate Facts" website, which is run by pesticide companies, claims that glyphosate does not damage DNA (is not genotoxic).2 But these claims are based on old studies carried out by the pesticide industry, submitted to regulators for regulatory authorization of glyphosate. The studies are kept hidden from the public and independent scientists on grounds of commercial confidentiality.
"Glyphosate Facts" claims that these tests' adherence to OECD (Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development) test guidelines is a sign of "data integrity and reliability".
What "Glyphosate Facts" fails to mention is that OECD test guidelines were put in place in the 1970s by regulators and industry in response to the discovery of widespread fraud at laboratories commissioned by industry to test chemicals and drugs for regulatory purposes. OECD test guidelines only apply to industry tests performed for regulatory purposes. While there is undoubted value in forcing industry to carry out standardized tests, OECD guidelines are based on old, outdated, insensitive methodologies. They are irrelevant to academic scientists, who prefer to use the most sensitive and most up-to-date methodologies for their research.
A major drawback to all industry studies on glyphosate is that they tested the isolated ingredient glyphosate, not the complete formulations that people and animals are exposed to (see "Roundup is more toxic than glyphosate"). Yet independent toxicological research shows that the formulations as sold and used are much more toxic than the isolated ingredient glyphosate. Therefore assurances of safety based on tests on glyphosate alone are worthless in any assessment of toxicity of the complete formulations.
In contrast to outdated and manipulated industry tests, independent studies show that glyphosate, and the formulated herbicides based on it, do damage DNA.
Findings include:
- Glyphosate herbicides altered cell cycle checkpoints in sea urchin embryos by interfering with the DNA repair machinery. Cell cycle dysfunction was seen from the first cell division in the sea urchin embryos. The failure of cell cycle checkpoints is known to lead to genomic instability and cancer in humans.
- Glyphosate and its main metabolite AMPA have been found to cause irreversible damage to DNA in human cells in vitro and in mice in vivo. Such damage to DNA may increase the risk of cancer and birth defects. AMPA damaged DNA in human cells in vitro at doses of 2.5-7.5mM and caused breaks in chromosomes at 1.8mM.
- An in vitro study showed that irradiation corresponding to a few minutes of sun exposure greatly amplified the DNA-damaging effects of glyphosate on mammalian cells. The glyphosate metabolite AMPA proved even more damaging, provoking cellular toxic effects from 0.5 ppb, a low environmentally relevant dose that can be found in European rivers and even in drinking water. The effects were even greater when glyphosate was mixed with other pesticides (the so-called "cocktail effect"), including atrazine. The authors concluded that "the Directive Standards for Pesticides in Drinking Water should be re-evaluated according to these underestimated factors of risk".
- Glyphosate and Roundup caused DNA damage in human mouth cells in vitro after a single 20-minute exposure at much lower doses than those used in agriculture. Roundup was much more toxic than glyphosate alone. The study showed that in principle, people who are exposed to Roundup through inhalation (as in South American soy-producing countries) could suffer DNA damage. With both glyphosate and Roundup, DNA damage occurred at concentrations below those required to cause cell damage, suggesting that the DNA damage was caused directly by these substances instead of being an indirect result of cell toxicity.
- Glyphosate and Roundup caused damage to DNA and chromosomes in the bone marrow of mice in vivo and in human cells in vitro. Roundup was only slightly more toxic than glyphosate.
- Roundup caused mutations in the DNA of fruit flies.
- Roundup increased the frequency of DNA adducts (cancer-causing chemicals that link to DNA), which can mark the onset of cancer, in the liver and kidneys of mice
- Genetic damage was found in soybean workers exposed to pesticides, glyphosate herbicides among them, in Brazil.
- Ecuadorian people exposed to aerial glyphosate herbicide spraying showed a higher degree of DNA damage in blood cells than a control population. The researchers ruled out tobacco, alcohol, non-prescription drugs and asbestos as causes. None of the individuals had used or been exposed to other herbicides or pesticides when the samples were taken. The study also found acute poisoning reactions to the glyphosate herbicide spraying, including intestinal pain and vomiting, diarrhoea, fever, heart palpitations, headaches, dizziness, numbness, insomnia, burning eyes, blurred vision, difficulty in breathing, and skin rash.

Early in the 2016 Primary campaign, I started a Facebook group: Bernie Sanders: Advice and Strategies to Help Him Win! As the primary season advanced, we shifted the focus to advancing Bernie's legislation in the Senate, particularly the most critical one, to protect Oak Flat, sacred to the San Carlos Apaches, in the Tonto National Forest, from John McCain's efforts to privatize this national forest and turn it over to Rio Tinto Mining, an Australian mining company whose record by comparison makes Monsanto look like altar boys, to be developed as North America's largest copper mine. This is monstrous and despicable, and yet only Bernie's Save Oak Flat Act (S2242) stands in the way of this diabolical plan.
We added "2020" to the title.
I am an art gallery owner in Santa Fe since 1980 selling Native American painting and NM landscapes, specializing in modern Native Ledger Art.
I have always been intensely involved in politics, going back to the mid's 1970's, being a volunteer lobbyist in the US Senate for the Secretary General of the United Nations, then a "snowball-in-hell" campaign for US Senate in NM in the late 70's, and for the past 20 years have worked extensively to pressure the FDA to rescind its approval for aspartame, the neurotoxic artificial sweetener metabolized as formaldehyde. This may be becoming a reality to an extent in California, which, under Proposition 65, is considering requiring a mandatory Carcinogen label on all aspartame products, although all bureaucracies seem to stall under any kind of corporate pressure.
Bills to ban aspartame were in the State Senates of New Mexico and Hawaii, but were shut down by corporate lobbyists (particularly Monsanto lobbyists in Hawaii and Coca Cola lobbyists in New Mexico).
For several years, I was the editor of New Mexico Sun News, and my letters to the editor and op/eds in 2016 have appeared in NM, California, Wisconsin, New York, Maryland, the Christian Science Monitor, USA Today, and many international papers, on the subject of consumer protection. Our best issue was 10 days before Obama won in 2008, when we published a special early edition of the paper declaring that Obama Wins! This was the top story on CNN for many hours, way back then....
My highest accomplishments thus far are
1. a plan to create a UN Secretary General's Pandemic Board of Inquiry, a plan that is in the works and might be achieved even before the 75th UN General Assembly in September 2020.
2. Now history until the needs becomes clear to the powers who run the United Nations: a UN Resolution to create a new Undersecretary General for Nutrition and Consumer Protection, strongly supported ten years ago by India and 53 cosponsoring nations, but shut down by the US Mission to the UN in 2008. To read it, google UNITED NATIONS UNDERSECRETARY GENERAL FOR NUTRITION, please.
These are not easy battles, any of them, and they require a great deal of political and journalistic focus. OpEdNews is the perfect place for those who have a lot to say, so much that they exceed the limiting capacities of their local and regional newspapers. Trying to go beyond the regional papers seems to require some kind of "inside" credentials, as if you had to be in a club of corporate-accepted writers, and if not, you are "from somewhere else," a sad state of corporate induced xenophobia that should have no place in America in 2020!
This should be a goal for every author with something current to say: breaking through yet another glass ceiling, and get your say said in editorial pages all over America. Certainly, this was a tool that was essentially ignored in 2016, and cannot be ignored in the big elections of 2020.
