Put the Demand Back in Supply and Demand

Using our power of 'Demand' to make retailers accountable.

Wal-Mart is the company we love to hate. But let's be honest with ourselves. There was a time when we welcomed them into our communities. That smiling yellow face swaying like the hypnotist's gold watch. We were lured by low prices and mega-store convenience. But in allowing ourselves to be led down this road, consumers have become unwitting accomplices in the flight of manufacturing jobs overseas, and in the degradation of the wages and working conditions of jobs both in the US and overseas. We can blame Wal-Mart, we can blame the government for its big-business coddling, but it's time we assume our rightful share of the blame.

Business tells us that the only things we want are low price and convenience. Why do they believe this? Could it be because we have allowed ourselves to become complacent, docile, silent consumers who will accept whatever a retailer offers us, as long as it is offered at an attractive price at a convenient location?

In lieu of active participation by consumers, retailers decide for us. What do we lose when retailers operate in a vacuum? Consumers lose control over selection and quality. Retailers lose the ability to carve out creative and lucrative market niches based on other consumer preferences. We all lose diversity and competition in the market place.

Consumers must stop allowing retailers to define the entire retail relationship. As I remember it, the relationship is supply AND demand. We as consumers, whether we know it or not, can and should define what retailers stock. What are our priorities? Do we complain when favorite products are pulled from store shelves? Do we request that new items be carried in our local markets? Do we complain about poor quality or service? Have we given retailers any real indication that we have other preferences or priorities? Are we willing to wield our considerable power to influence the marketplace?

There will always be customers who shop with only the lowest price in mind, through financial necessity or personal preference. For those of us willing and able to pay a higher price to serve other priorities, it is time to act. Here is my 7 step program for taking back the marketplace:

1.Establish relationships with local vendors. Make it personal, make eye contact, remember their names. In time they will remember you, that you are a customer that always shops on Wednesdays, that you always bring your own shopping bags, that you purchase specialty (read: high mark-up) items etc.

2.Shop at independent vendors whenever possible. They are more likely to carry specialty and unusual items, and to respond to customer requests. Since they have smaller infrastructures managers are empowered to make their own stocking decisions. With chain stores, product stocking, even including the number of facings of an item, may be rigidly controlled by a distant corporate office.

3.When a cashier asks you "Did you find everything you were looking for?" answer truthfully and be specific. Make sure they are aware of items out of stock, or that you noticed that an item was no longer carried. Fill out those customer surveys on your receipts.

4.Establish your own non-price criteria (recyclable or recycled packaging, union-made, fair-trade, organic, locally produced, natural fibers, no sweatshop labor, American-made, support for boycotts, etc.) and gradually allow them to influence your purchasing habits.

5.Resist the impulse to purchase your specialty items on-line, without first trying to get them through local vendors. Your local infrastructure is funded in part by sales taxes. When you purchase on-line, your local area likely loses sales tax revenue. Certainly, if local vendors will not carry the item, click away using your new non-price criteria.

6.Talk to department managers about new items. Be polite, but make sure they realize that you can get it elsewhere (competitors, on-line), that you accept some inconvenience to obtain it, but that you would prefer to buy it at their store (an opportunity for the store to reap profit from a high mark-up item). Give them vendor information to make it easier for them to order specialty items.

7.If you want an item stocked, fill out customer request cards. These have more impact if done in person, after you have established yourself as a regular customer. Retailers are in business to sell products. If they believe there is demand for an item, they will stock it. The trick is to establish and maintain that demand. Follow up on the item, and if the store chooses to stock it, BUY it.

Yes Virginia, it works.

Here are a few success stories of active consumer-retailer relationships

Proctor and Gamble, in response to consumer activism has decided to carry a fair-trade coffee through its Millstone line. It remains for consumers to request the brand through their grocery stores.

King Arthur Flour is a worker owned business in upstate Vermont, carrying specialty flours and high-end baking supplies. They established relationships through their catalog customers, instructing them on how to approach grocery managers to establish supply chains directly from King Arthur to local supermarkets. Now, King Arthur ships to every state in the US.

Seventh Generation offers environmentally friendly paper goods and cleaning products, with high recycled content, biodegradable ingredients and recycled/recyclable packaging. Though once available only through a catalog and web site, local chains are now carrying their products, in response to customer demand.

My neighbor Laura, found that the local grocery was frequently out of her favorite Chai. Knowing many of the cashiers and managers by name, she brought this to their attention, noting that a competing grocery was never out this brand. They responded immediately, first buying a case from the competing grocery to make sure that the item was immediately restocked, and then modifying their inventory practices. In the past year, Laura has never found the item to be out of stock again.

Decide what's important to you and ask for it. Let's put the demand back in supply and demand.
