Our wounded democracy

By Peter Lawlor

A hard clear look at the reason we suffer under a corporate plutocracy and the possibility that we may slide into fascism if Americans don't start paying attention.

::::::::

The politically incorrect but absolutely true reason as to why our political system has become a race to the bottom.

We should all know by now, in order to compete, candidates must raise millions. mostly from corporations and billionaires. So naturally the influence of the people has diminished as the 1% gain control of democracy. Wealth flows to the top. The middle class and the poor increasingly suffer. The seeds of revolution are sown. So we see a greedy billionaire, Donald Trump who won politifacts "lie of the year" for his sheer record number of lies, rise to power, we should not be surprised" and it should shock no one that his supporters ignore his lies and cheer his hate speech. We understand that most of those right wing supporters only care about attacks on minorities and simplistic promises to return America to white control. But for others it is frustration and fear" fueled by ignorance. His "rallies" are filled with not just supporters, but are also populated with racist hate groups and fascists and are in essence mobs" which he inflames and pushes to violence.

By comparison, the democrats are worlds apart. The discourse is mostly civil and the positions are mostly populist. However even in the democratic ranks there are problems. We have Bernie Sanders who takes no money from super pac's and is running the only truly populist campaign in modern history" and yet he is being attacked with lies and fear mongering. My guess is the establishment I.E. banks, wall street and corporate interests are extremely frightened that his upstart movement may actually succeed and are willing to fund efforts to stop him. So the chorus of "socialist communist" type lies grow louder". and the ignorant buy it.

Then there is Hillary Clinton. While she has an admirable record on some issues, she also has a pro corporate record that is at odds with much of her campaign rhetoric. My main objection to Ms. Clinton is that she has a long record of half truths and I am sorry to say, lies. She practices old school negative politics. Consider just a few facts. Let's put aside her support for the disastrous Iraq war, since other democrats (not Sanders) were guilty of poor judgment there also. She was a strong supporter of NAFTA which cost millions of American jobs and was a strong supporter of TPP until she entered the race and realized a majority of democrats were against it. She called fracking "a bridge to the future" and was a strong advocate for it along with republicans" until she entered the race. She made false statements like 'she left the white house broke'.. a lie. She claimed she landed in Bosnia "under sniper fire".. a lie. She and surrogates implied that Sanders statements about his long involvement in the civil rights movement were questionable.. until they were proven, then she backed off. She recently claimed Sanders didn't support her healthcare efforts in 93 - 94.. a lie. She claimed Sanders would delay clean power.. a lie. I could go on, but I hope you see the pattern here. A fact check showed that 49% of Ms. Clinton's statements statements checked were either "half true" to "pants on fire" false. www.politifact.com/personalities/hillary-clinton/

My question for Ms. Clinton's supporters is, why do you dismiss these facts and continue your support? Which is exactly what the Trump supporters do" ignore facts. Especially when we have a candidate with a decades long record of fighting for civil rights, economic rights and the environment. A man who takes no money from super pacs or corporations and is the only candidate willing to really take on the big money power brokers who have a stranglehold on our democracy. or as some describe it, our "plutocracy".

We have a once in a lifetime opportunity to shake off the plutocrats, the fascists and move forward toward the "more perfect union" our forefathers envisioned. Don't blow it America.

Authors Bio:
Love learning. Hate stupidity and intolerance.

First let me say that I am not a professional writer, although I have written a couple of screenplays and even sold one some years ago. I am however a professional actor and a member of the screen actors guild. The only reason I used the rather short bio until now was ignorance. I write for personal reasons and never thought that anyone would really care or bother reading my 'stuff'.

That said, I have taught film acting, traveled continuously for about forty years, work presently as a dog behavior/trainer and am an avid political junkie.

I find the direction of our country alarming and am determined to do my bit to fight the corporate takeover of our political system. I am a true independent looking for a cause... until then, I donate and volunteer for progressive candidates and drive the Tea Party types crazy on Facebook.

Although I am not sure I remember it exactly, my favorite quote is from Albert Einstein... "Great spirits will always encounter violent opposition from mediocre minds".
