Vermont High Schoolers Cut Fox "News" Down Over Ethics in Journalism

By Meryl Ann Butler

The Quantum Leap Exhibit Program at Mount Anthony Union High School in Bennington, VT took a good look at FOX "News" in contrast to the published Ethics of Journalism per the Society of Professional Journalists. They concluded that FOX "News" failed miserably at practicing journalism on every level, as evidenced in their outstanding video, "Vermont High Schoolers Just Destroy Fox News About The Ethics Of Journalism." (Video)

Vermont's youth clearly have a better understanding of journalistic integrity than FOX "News." (Note: in this article, this writer is following the White House's lead in a unique step toward truth, when it dropped the word "News" from the SOTU luncheon placecards for FOX, while other placecards included the full terms, "ABC News," "CBS News," and "NBC News.")

The Quantum Leap Exhibit Program at Mount Anthony Union High School in Bennington, VT analyzed FOX "News" practices in light of the published Ethics of Journalism per the Society of Professional Journalists.

The students did their research, found that FOX failed at practicing journalism on every level, and offered a stunning response via video.

Dave Kilby (Liberals Unite) says, "There used to be a time in this country when a propaganda organization wouldn't have been allowed. At the time, all broadcast media had to conform to the 'Fairness Doctrine.'

"The doctrine 'required the holders of broadcast licenses to both present controversial issues of public importance and to do so in a manner that was, in the Commission's view, honest, equitable and balanced.' "

Kilby notes that Reagan's F.C.C. removed this safety net in 1985.

In the video, the students say (to FOX):

Based on our studies about the field of journalism, we have determined that you're not practicing journalism. You're practicing rank propaganda.

...

By watching Fox "News", we have learned buckets about journalism -- what to do and, more importantly, what never to do. It is our hope that Fox "News" can learn the very same from watching us.

Don't miss a moment of this juicy, 8-minute video:

Commenter Ron Mills posted, "Fox 'News' has been proven repeatedly to be a purveyor of disinformation and outright lies presented as facts. Knowledgeable observers long ago ceased to take their reporting seriously. However, it's one thing to be called out for shoddy journalism by experienced media analysts and news professionals. But when a high school class can demolish the highest rated cable "news" network with ease, the folks responsible should reconsider their career choices."

These young people give me hope, and I give them an "A" in "Solutions Journalism."
