Old Bones

By molly cruz

To vote for Hillary Clinton, I'd have to abandon a conviction that has evolved over the decades, as I've been around a while. I don't have high hopes for her as Commander in Chief.

::::::::

I think its wrong to expect too much from Hillary, who has after all given her all to politics, and in the long run gotten not much in return. I mean, what is she after all, smart as hell, but a pudgy little blond woman who was born on the Right side of the tracks; with a silver spoon in her mouth? What does she know about life, besides what she's read?

Sure, she hung out with Bill and the trailer trash crowd long enough to get a brush of street cred; but since he already was swimming so hard to get out of that pond, street cred was the last thing anybody was worried about. With his charm and her money, there was nowhere they couldn't have gone. They'd be gods in any event, even if she'd swayed him to the Right, instead of the other way around.

One scarcely considers the fact that right and wrong affected her choice to change teams. She was with an charismatic hotty and getting laid. Later the significance of his prowess in that regard would be driven home and piled into a mountain of embarrassments, and become the karmic flaw in their marriage and her political future.

In the good old days, she'd have let him be president and pumped out a plethora of brilliant, politically talented children, like the Roosevelt's and Kennedy's, another dynasty of saviors , a new royalty if you will, another educated elite with global perspective that doesn't quit. But feminism was at its apex, and it seemed to suit her just fine. However, she didn't win any feminists' votes sticking with him after the impeachment; as that choice seemed purely political on her part. Little did the larger public know what similar scenarios she'd suffered in prior years during their Arkansas chapter.

And how do we know what it takes to make it in that racket? With the intrusion of the media, a career long held by the greatest thinkers of our time became an actor's game, with appearance playing a greater roll than we are willing to admit in our choices. Dennis Kucinich, that little troll, could put the World to rights in three months; but who will listen to him, never mind his goddess of a wife, whom he seems to have acquired, much like the Bower Bird's famed architecture, for his own decoration?

What Hillary knows is that the supposed aim of politics-- that of bringing truth, reason and peace to its constituency-- is bunk. Quite the contrary; rabble-rousing is its most essential talent. Just as the Federal Reserve tweaks the interest rate to perform the function of keeping things moving financially; the job of politics is to create crises that keep the people jumping-- jumping as if their lives depended on it; because the nature of life is that if it is to advance, it cannot stand still, not for one split second.

This makes her a cynic, and that is what we sense. Her marriage, and the social climate she and Bill chose to inhabit, are so soaked in cynicism, she'd have had to been deaf, dumb and blind to survive without that typical narrowing of the eyes, the set of the jaw"there's just nothing dewy about her. But by God, she's just playing the game" she didn't invent it.

One might hope that a woman at the helm would proffer to the world our most feminine, loving, warm, gentle policies; but one suspects that quite the opposite, Hillary will try to beat the guys at their own game. Even if we consider the possibility that the balance in the Congress could gain a Leftward advantage; one has to wonder how much good that would do, with her at the helm, especially as far as foreign policy is concerned.

She tries to soften her smile, her hairdo, but her rolling, artificially jovial laugh deepens with every year, as she approaches that sexless stage of life when we often make the most sense out of life; even if we often lose our sympathy for it. The two-for-one advantage of having Bill around is her ace in the hole. On her own, I don't think she'd make it. Once again, I think youth is our ticket for the Presidency, if we want to get somewhere. It's time to shake the old bones out of Congress, as brittle as the noble patriotic myths that no longer sustain us, as we've all become cynics too.

Have two children, one of whom is rock mogul, the other has three daughters, one of whom has two daughters, making me a great grandmother at 68, very proud. For twenty years I operated a private primary school, Orchard School, in Santa Cruz CA. Still going strong but I'm retired and write much of the time. Strong believer in the space program and our subconscious quest as a species to prevent celestial onslaughts of one kind and another, for which it is my conviction that we have developed nuclear power, though we've had to use false wars to do so; in the end I believe we'll redeem ourselves in this way, which is why I find the abandonment of the shuttle program so sad. The Russians will do the honors with the next menace from Heaven, or have said that they will. In any case, nothing matters much if we don't, not the debt ceiling, pollution, nothing. All moot.
