The Republican Party as Now Constituted is a Dinosaur
By Dave Lefcourt
Republicans met in Hollywood last week attempting to map a path to a resurgence but couldn't agree what that path would be. Many insisted it was Romney causing them to lose & all that was needed was a change in tone. How does one change the tone of opposition to same sex marriage when the assembly appr'd a resolution defining marriage as only a union between a man & a woman. The Repub. party as now constituted is a dinosaur.

You have to hand it the Republicans.
Meeting in Hollywood the past week they were attempting to "map a path to a resurgence". But this usually lock step crowd couldn't agree on what that "path" would be.
Many rejected the idea that Republican positions in 2012 alienated key voting groups insisting it was a weak presidential candidate that caused them to lose and all that was needed was "a change in tone," (tell that to Hispanics and single women who completely abandoned them in the 2012 presidential election and it was a whole lot more than Romney being a weak candidate).
Ah, how does one "change the tone" of opposition to same sex marriage when those assembled approved a resolution defining marriage as only a union between a man and a woman?
RNC Chairman Reince Priebus when asked what to say to Latino voters said, " I'm not talking about changing the principle of our party, but I am trying to communicate that principle draped in grace and respect. Generally we've done that." Really! Just how do you drape in "grace and respect" your wanting to deport immigrants while breaking up families in the process, even families with children born in America then rejecting a path toward citizenship as a form of amnesty?
When you look at last years Republican presidential primaries they had all candidates (except for Ron Paul) wooing prospective hard line republican voters who tend to dominate primary voting but represent a small fraction of the entire voting public. Moving to the "center' as all Republican Presidential candidates must do in an attempt to lure Independent voters is sheer hypocrisy with Mitt Romney being the epitome of a candidate taking on the appearance of a chameleon whenever he spoke at a campaign event.
Let's not mince words; the Republican Party as now constituted is a dinosaur. If not for gerrymandering by Republican controlled state legislatures who create congressional districts that all but assure a Republican Congressional victory, the House would be a Democratic majority.
Let's consider; this a party made up of Rush Limbaugh's white "ditto heads", old white men, racists and bigots who are anti-abortionists, homophobes, believers in creationism where the Earth is some 10,000 years old and man walked with the dinosaurs. They're global warming deniers who sop up the propaganda spewed out by the coal and oil industries as well as being anti-immigration and biased toward Hispanics, Muslims and all people of color.
Lest we forget they're anti-government except when natural disasters occur and then they want all the governmental help they can get.
The party has been co-opted by fundamentalist Christians who are fixated on Israel, the rapture of believers before the tribulation and the 2 nd coming of Christ.
The demographics of the country are changing but the Republican "true believers" aren't about to abandon their ideological fantasy of a white dominated 1950's America.
Ideologues don't change. It is their Achilles Heal. So don't expect the Republican Party to change its ideology even if it remains a minority party. To them it's better to go down in defeat rather than accept and adjust to the demographic reality of America as it truly is.
