We of Western origins have sought to conquer the world, and to grow our technology linearly for the past 6 to 10,000 years. Even the sky could not define our limitations and boundaries We wanted it all, including the depths of space. And, indeed, we have conquered this world, for there is not an island, or a subsection of any continent, that has not been invaded by the Euro-Asian mindset.
The reason we have not changed is because our epistemology is ultimately focused on the external world. We pay little attention to what is within ourselves....the golden egg......the container of our evolutionary potential. Our quest has been to "own" the world rather than to discover who we are in our essence and who we could be. Thus we live in poverty while owning all kinds of gizmos and gadgets. Ours is a devouring, or taker culture. We are sociopaths murdering anything in sight in order to make a profit.
Our spirituality mirrors our politics, philosophies and sciences in that we focus on the external. We have a paternalistic externalized God whose internal, feminine essence is negated. It is interesting that God's feminine Nature in the Old Testament was Wisdom and Understanding. She has been fired since the Roman empire emerged victorious under the banner of Christianity. Now, there is only a "He" God with the exception of the human version of Mary, who is relegated to celebration by the Catholics at Christmas time. Yet, Her human facade hides the meaning of Her name, the Sea, which is to say the state of undifferentiated Matter underlying the cosmos (Genesis 1:2). In this sense, She is the undifferentiated chaos at the beginning of all moments containing infinite potential. Of course the western world wished to slay Her and Her child (this myth was prevalent in ancient times, not just Jesus) because He was a threat. He was what we could be...if we could understand and experience the Unconditioned aspect of ourselves.
The focus of our lives, and our creation of a God that suits our mindset, is highly masculine. Thus we have our noses and eyes pointed "out there." In accordance to this orientation, we often define ourselves according to what we do for the "Man," the Corporate Boss, and what he allots us in prestige and money. Yet, none of us are what we define ourselves as. I am not merely a writer, or counselor, or even a man. In my depths, in your depths, we are the undefinable all. Even mathematically, I can show various ratios that occur in my body, and yours, that ultimately refer to our infinity. This truth is reflected in ratios such as "phi" (see Wikipedia article listed below).
There have been great artisans and mystics who challenge our dominating, externalized, and limited points of view. For example, John Lennon writes in the song "Revolution", "You better free your mind instead." This means we need to change ourselves internally and not focus so much on the external. Like a baby that has messed its pants, we too need to be changed. And the mother that changes us needs to be our own Psyche. We can no longer rely on the external psychopaths that we have adopted as our surrogate Mothers. Our change of pants cannot be legislated by congress and signed by the president or given the thumbs up by the bought and sold Supreme Court.
The ultimate one we need to court is our own Soul, not the externalized patriarchs. Our Soul is but a knocked unconscious sleeping beauty awaiting the kiss of Her prince, which is nothing less nor more than our Love...not some externalized aristocrat.
The only way to reclaim and awaken our power, our Sleeping Beauty, is by going inward. It is only by going inward and tapping into our potential that we can unfold a live and vibrant world. To do this, sometimes we need a midwife, someone who can help us bring forth what lies within as potential. Thus there are folks who are integrating psychology and spirituality in helping people to unfold that potential. Julie Krull is one such person.
Julie is a contemporary spiritual teacher, Soul Care Practitioner, Counseling Psychologist, ACE Mentor, writer, speaker, and coach. As a visionary leader and change agent, Julie exhibits a passionate calling to serve the wholeness of humanity. Her drive to teach others is fiery and passionate. According to her, we need to realize "this simple truth: when we awaken and live from our essence, we discover personal peace, passion, and purpose. As we activate this remembrance, we heal and collectively heal the world -- actualizing peace on earth."
Each one of us is that important. It is "we", not "they" that will bring peace to this planet by kindling it within ourselves.
Like many, both famous and unheralded, Julie's passion towards counseling, and her practice of soul care, was seeded by a powerful experience during her early childhood. At the age of 4, she had a near death experience where she transcended her body. This experience ultimately led her to engage in consciousness studies while also opening her up to secret realms.
Julie furthermore states that due to this near death experience, she has cultivated a deeper sense of knowing regarding the world. It is interesting that its not uncommon to find many people, some who are labeled mystics, who have their initial visionary experiences around the age of 4 or 5. Perhaps this is the age at which awareness shifts into a higher level but still is unconditioned by our cultural myths. We then are ripe to have a visionary experience that helps to consolidate our sense of purpose in our life.
As Julie matured into an 11-year old, she began to recognize the horrors, violence, and inequities inherent in our culture. While insistently questioning God about them, she again was lifted into an out-of-body experience. She and a spiritual "mentor" held the Earth as a snow-globe in their hands, deeply moved by its suffering. Then light entered into the globe, stirring up the sparkles and blessing the scene and the people below. She understood then that she was to be a part of spreading and celebrating this healing enlightenment.
Julie's life, near death, and resurrection experience, speaks to a universal truth. Through death, Julie was able to tap into a higher dimension of Being. Thus, as a reflection of this process in Julie, and in all of us, fall and winter are necessary for spring and summer. For resurrection to occur, we need to die. The healing of the Earth and the healing of ourselves requires that we die to what we have become. The sickness of our Souls stems from several centuries of top-down control and its indoctrination tactics mastered by Kings, Queens, Priests, Presidents and Fuhrers. Thus due to our conditioning our Soul oftentimes does not see any way out. She is disempowered and feels conformity to the culturally determined norm is the only way to be.
Ah, but Sleeping Beauty is destined to kiss Her prince, Love Himself.
As Julie was able to die at the age of 4 and come back with a deeper understanding, we need to die to our conditioning in order to create a new life that is in harmony with all the other lives on this planet. In order for us to evolve into a more encompassing and empowering mindset, we need to die to our divisive, warring and disempowering ways of relating to the world.
Perhaps this is the purpose of counseling? To help us die to the old while cultivating the new? It is interesting in this regard that the original meaning of the term education was to bring forth. To bring forth is to foster the inner development of a person. This is the true function of counseling--not to adapt a person to a sick culture, but, to foster the inner development of the person.
Julie furthermore confronts the combative nature of our culture, ranging in everything from the relationship of nations to our various intellectualized idealism. She does not do this by negating duality, but by integrating it into unity. Thus she states that duality, the sense of this-vs-that, is contained in unity. The experience of unity is through transcendence. Transcendence is not about denial of the world, its about seeing its unity. Thus Martin Luther King climbed the same mountain as Moses did and saw the integration of the little black boy and the little white girl. Julie, I would maintain, has traveled that same mountain.
Like Julie, Martin Luther King and Moses, we need to move into a higher dimension of experience in order to get a sense of the ultimate unity of the uni-verse. We can no longer afford to remain in the "divide and conquer" mentality of the corporate elite. Our survival as a species, and, perhaps even our planet, depend on our ability to see the whole and act in accordance to the health and wealth of the All.
Its no use just reading or listening to the words of Moses, the Apollo astronauts (many of whom were profoundly influenced by seeing the Earth from the Moon's perspective), or Martin Luther King. We need to climb the mountain ourselves to get the global picture. We need to hold the Earth and her people in our hands with tender loving care and shine beams of love upon it. We can no longer afford living life as a spectator. We can't talk about Moses' trip to Sinai. Nor can we read the Bible and take it for granted that Moses did climb the mountain. No! We need to make the journey ourselves.
Julie claims that our trusted institutions are breaking down. Our old paradigms are not working. In essence, we could say we are in the arms of death. Yet, as spring is born of the dark womb of winter, we may be resurrected. Not necessarily as what we are now, but as a higher form of being.
Of course, there is also the choice of just dissolving into the ground from whence we came. We are not the only tools in the shed of Evolutionary Power. Thus, perhaps another species, or several other species, can take our place. Whales and dolphins are highly intelligent creatures. Whales according to what I understand don't pollute the Ocean. Yet they have complex communication skills. Perhaps a sign of intelligence is that of a creature that does not pollute but instead lives in harmony with the environment. According to this definition, humans could be rated as being beneath the intelligence levels of such creatures as whales and dolphins.
Having more hope regarding the human race than I have at times, Julie feels there is a new unified field emerging that is influencing all aspects of our lives. Perhaps the integration of physics, mysticism, biology, and all disciplines is part of that unified field. In order to survive, we need to start seeing how the parts are connected in making the whole while also seeing how the parts contain the whole fractally. We humans play an important role on this Earth. Through our unique styles of consciousness, we have eyes through which the Earth comes to know Herself.
Our awareness and the Earth's awareness are not two. Perhaps our partaking in the panoramic picture through the eyes of Martin Luther King, Ghandi, Christ and Moses, we are the eyes of the Earth looking at Herself. In other words, it is impossible for an eye to see itself. It can't happen. But, if the eye had a mirror, then it would be able to look into the mirror and see itself.
All parents tend to see themselves mirrored in their child. The Earth, and the Cosmic I or Eye, are no different.
Could this be our function on the grander scale? Perhaps self-awareness is the reason for all of Life? We are all eyes seeking to see themselves through the reflection of each other. In the gaze of love we see our own and the other's beauty conjoined.
Perhaps this is also the function and meaning of people like Julie? Its all about awakening to who we are and who we are, in essence, is no different than Nature Herself. Why else would the term "Nature" mean Essence if She were not our Self?
As stated in the Hindu Upanishads:
It is above
It is below
It is, indeed
this entire world.
And when one knows this
one knows bliss in the Self
and in all worlds is free.
