Did Jesus Have a Wife? If So, How Does That Change Things- Open Thread

By Rob Kall

A papyrus fragment, in early Coptic, suggests that Jesus may have had a wife. What's your take on the implications and questions this raises?

::::::::

The NY Times reports,
historian of early Christianity at Harvard Divinity School has identified a scrap of papyrus that she says was written in Coptic in the fourth century and contains a phrase never seen in any piece of Scripture: "Jesus said to them, "My wife ...' "

The text beyond "my wife" is cut off. There is also a fragment of text "Mary is worthy of it."

The old testament was codified about the same time-- when hundreds of writings were rejected and thrown out.

Questions abound.  Is it talking about Mary Magdalene? What effect does this have on the Roman Catholic churches policy about celibate priests?

How does the story and the message and the teachings and values change if Jesus has a family?

What are your thoughts?
