Q&A: on the will of the people and the Democrats position on the war

By RJ Schinner

Question: Why is it that with so many people demanding and voting for an immediate end to the war on Iraq is there no serious move by the Democrats to end the war now, and why are potential Democratic candidates who are opposed to the war knocked out of the primaries because they're "un-electable" (for having a position most of the people agree with)?

::::::::

4/6/06: The latest polls gave Bush an approval rating of 34%, in large part due to widespread opposition to the war on Iraq. Today, the New York Times reported that in Wisconsin:

"Residents in 24 of 32 municipalities, including the state capital, voted in favor of immediately pulling out troops from Iraq in referendums on Tuesday. About 61 percent of 65,682 voters supported withdrawal in communities where as few as 22 or as many as 35,596 people cast votes. Residents petitioned to get the referendum on the ballot in each community as part of a campaign initiated by the Wisconsin Green Party. The vote brings to 100 the number of cities and towns nationwide that have passed resolutions calling for the return of troops, according to the Institute for Policy Studies in Washington."

Answer: Most of them voted for the war to begin with, might have criticisms of Bush's handling of the war, but nonetheless claim "now that we're there, we can't just leave". Leading Democrats might talk about "strategic redeployment", but will never oppose the very nature of the "war on terror" (which is nothing but an unending war for empire around the world), or oppose the torture, massacres of innocent people, and unjust nature of this war.

That's up to us to do.
