Insanity Masquerading as Sanity

By Dave Lefcourt

Weeks into the Republican primary season and there's no discussion by the candidates of the real issues and problems facing the American people. Nothing on the widening income gap and wealth inequality between the 1% and the 99%, the lack of jobs, the foreclosure crisis, the growth of the poor and the decimation of the middle class. This crowd seems completely detached from the reality most people in America are facing.

Just weeks into the latest Republican presidential primary season and there's a few things that have to be said.

From here, there appears to be absolutely no discussion of the real issues and problems facing the American people. It seems all these contenders (pretenders?) can talk about is who is more conservative, whose "values" come closest to some idyllic, imagined former America that never existed or who can shower more innuendos at another's sexual peccadilloes or deride each others suspect business practices (or mouthing some other nonsense too inane to recall).

One does suppose, considering the takeover of the Republican Party by the extremist, ideological far right, the only way to secure the parties nomination is to appeal to this crowd. But really, this thin slice of America is a fringe element, existing mentally and psychologically in some parallel universe and not in the reality or circumstances where the majority of the American people live.

Just where is the discussion on issues and topics that impact most of the people i.e. the widening income gap disparity and wealth inequality between the 1% and the 99%, jobs and the exceedingly high unemployment levels, the millions in foreclosure, the decimation of the middle class, the growth of the poor and the effects of globalization, millions without health insurance, the crumbling infrastructure, or effects of the "Citizens United" ruling by SCOTUS swamping the electoral process in favor of corporations and special interests, the bailouts of the financial industry at the expense of the taxpayer, the bloated defense budget and the expenditures for unnecessary wars, the environment and global warming et al; but there is nothing, not a word.

This crowd of presidential wannabees seems completely detached from the reality most people in America are facing.

Of course you'd never know that reading and watching the main stream media which dutifully delivers in perfectly objective stenographic fashion whatever these fools mouth without suggesting it may be utter nonsense what these mental pygmies spout off about.

Just because they're vying for the highest office in the land doesn't mean they automatically deserve deference and respect, especially if all they're uttering and offering is foolishness and nonsense.

Yet the primary season does reveal some of the key dysfunctional elements in the state of the electoral process in America i.e. caucuses in Iowa, the first primaries in New Hampshire and South Carolina that represent an infinitesimal small cross section of the American people. Add in the now legal and limitless deluge of Super Pac money in support of or against this or that candidate which serves to further corrupt and distort that electoral process and it all becomes a spectacle that has nothing to do with the real problems and issues facing the country but is reported by the MSM as the normal legitimate functioning of our democracy.

It is all quite maddening; insanity masquerading as sanity.
