Painting "The color RED'

By Merlin Flower

Painting the color RED

::::::::

"The color RED', it could be because the brain is so used to hearing the name " the color purple', it rather mechanically, and obviously in an uncreative span of time choose to select this title. Once on the recovery mode, I had time to analyze and give it a different title-"The color is', "the color', "Red splash', and various other spin-offs of the first title.

Alice Walker's fans may not see any associated between the book and this painting, obviously. Who would? I still remember reading Alice Walker for the first time, and the effect the short stories had on me. A prized possession of one of my teachers, the book was given with instructions to be "careful' as the pages were fragile. Two years earlier, when I had received a book with warning to be "careful' I simply didn't read it as every page I tuned proved to reinforce the warning. Maybe since it was a devotional book, I just needed an excuse to skip. But with Alice Walker, I did read the short stories, albeit in a slow pace.   Did I like it? Far from liking, I absolutely wanted to forget the book as the characters clung to me.

Five years later, I think I have had success with the "remembering to forget' part, after the effort was lost in life's fast lanes, but the feeling it evoked still stays. I read "color purple' after watching the movie, so could digest the scenes more easily.   With choice, I still, happily, skip watching violent movies, and reading tragedies.   Now though, there is an outlet through art. This piece of art, however, is not a product of those circumstances.

I wanted to add two line of Alice Walker's poem somewhere here. I did a small search-where else when we have Google-got to see many forums, mainly posted by student grappling with assignments on Alice Walker. You know, luckily I don't have to reel under the weight of agginments anymore, and I am going to read the poems in my own pace. So I am not going to introduce lines from poems. Yes, thanks for asking, finally settled on "The Color Red' itself.
