The Heartening Resistance to Tyranny in Wisconsin

By Dave Lefcourt

It is heartening to see thousands in Wisconsin massing against Gov. Scott Walker's attempt to kill collective bargaining w/ the public unions in his state. It is important Walker's union busting be beaten back in Wisconsin as a message to other Governors that the people oppose their union busting methods. Wisconsin is the front line. In solidarity, the protests need to spread to other cities and states.

It is heartening to see thousands of protestors in Madison, Wisconsin massing against Governor Scott Walker's blatant attempt to kill collective bargaining with the public unions in his state.

Walker, bankrolled by Koch Bros. largesse is nothing but a shill for them and other big corporate interests that are out to kill all unions nationwide.

That is why it is so important that Walkers' attempt at union busting (in the name of reducing the states deficit) be beaten back in Wisconsin as a way of sending the message to other Republican governors and state legislatures the majority of people oppose their union busting methods.

Of course it is pure propaganda blaming the public unions and state workers for the billion dollar deficits besetting most states.

The perpetrators of this nonsense make no reference to the real culprits behind the states deficits, the Wall Street banksters and financial "masters of the universe" that bundled toxic mortgages into mortgage backed securities (derivatives) and then promoted and sold them to unsuspecting state pension funds that subsequently took the hit when the sub-prime mortgage market went bust in the fall of 2008.

That's because the financial behemoths are huge underwriters of the campaigns of those elected charlatans who go about protecting them (and not holding them accountable) while blaming the public unions and state workers.

It is not just in the Arab world where the need to overthrow tyrannical leaders is necessary. However in their world it is clearer who the enemy is.

In the U.S. it isn't a single corrupt dictator but a troika of multiple big moneyed corporatists and lobbyists, their elected handmaidens in state legislatures and the Congress plus the militarists in the Pentagon and defense industries that benefit from our unending war based economy that need to be confronted and overtaken. It is this plutocracy that reigns in the U.S. It is also bleeding and bankrupting the country and destroying the middle class that has been the backbone of the countries prosperity.

That middle class is being whittled away with the loss of middle class jobs, wages and benefits that leads to unemployment, personal debt, foreclosures and bankruptcy.

Yet hope is alive. In Wisconsin the demonstrations are coalescing around union busting by a corporate backed and bankrolled governor and the Republican sycophants in the legislature (with Democrat legislators relocating themselves in Illinois to prevent a quorum and vote on the governor's union busting proposal).

It is the front line of a progressive revolt against corporate backed corrupted politicos and policies that need to spread to other cities and states [1] .

It needs to happen throughout the U.S.

As the Arab world and Wisconsin show, grass roots populist resistance to tyranny needs to be confronted in order to overcome it.

[1] Solidarity with the protestors in Wisconsin, with demonstrations called for in other cities and states, has been seen by this observer on some internet sites and blogs, but whether they are occurring is not known at the time of this writing.
