That Sand-[n-word] Lying There On The Ground

By Doug Soderstrom

A bad day on the sands of Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, or anywhere in the Middle East where our soldiers kill without conscience!

::::::::

Bright and shiny,
Skies clear,
And blue,
A Sunday morning.

Conscience,
In good hands,
Packed away,
In a lock box,
Back home,

With mom,

And my,
Little sister,
Sue,
In New Jersey.

Automatic weapon,
At my side,
Dressed,
And ready,
To go out,
On patrol.

Rifle aimed,
Crosshairs aligned,

Breath held,
Shot fired,

Another Sand n-word,
Down,
A job,
Well done!

The battle decided,
The enemy destroyed,
An evening stroll,
After having,
Allowed the trophy,
A forty year-old corpse,
To properly stiffen.

However,
As I approached,
The remains,
Of what,
Was at one time,
A living,
Breathing,
Human being,
I happened to notice,
Something,
That I will,
Never forget,
A photo,
Of what must,
Have been,
The Father,
The soldier,
I killed,
His wife,
And their two sons,
And three daughters.

Horrified,
By the realization,
That I had murdered,
Someone,
Just like me,

I flinched,
In fact,
At that very moment,
I think,
I wanted to die,
As my conscience,
From out of nowhere,
Seemingly launched,
A vicious attack upon,
The military's,
Rather wicked attempt,
To destroy my soul,

And with no mercy,
Whatsoever,
My conscience,
Lashed out at me,
For the,
Terrible thing,
I had done!

There it was,
Lying at my feet,
A stiffened frame,
Frightened eyes,
Sunken deep within,
The cavity,
Of the man's,
Shattered skull,
And at that moment,
I saw his soul!

Ravaged,
By shame,
And doubt,
I stood there,
In the,
Dreadful,
Darkness,
Of death,

Realizing that,
I had become,
A savage beast.

It was then,
That I began,
To understand,

That I,
Had been,
The one,

Who killed,
Jesus,

That I,
Had been,
The one,

Who crucified,
Christ!
