Ode to Tiger Woods
By Robert Richardson
A parody on William Blake's "Tiger, Tiger" that addresses the Tiger Woods brouhaha.
::::::::
In the media limelight,
What a sorry fall from grace
For one who always held first place.
Didst thou think thou could ride free,
And that no rules applied to thee?
From heaven now a fall to limbo,
A heavy price for any bimbo.
And what bosom and what art
Could twist the sinews of thy heart?
And when thy heart began to beat,
Did judgment melt in all that heat?
First the passion, now the pain,
In what furnace fried thy brain?
Was it worth it? What dread grasp
Held thee witless in its clasp?
Didst thou think no one had spoken,
To break the trust that thou had broken?
That none would claim her bragging right?
"I was with Tiger Woods last night!"
Thou wast not evil, nor a clown,
But some would like to bring thee down.
So when the righteous jackals bay,
Well, all these dogs will have their day.
What thou hath done they all did too,
A common failing, nothing new.
But one thing they cannot forgive:
You were too good to let you live.
It seems to be the way we are,
We climb so high, we fall so far.
So private woes are public pains
And no civility remains.
But this will pass, the wounds will heal,
The howling pack will turn and wheel.
You will survive this trying day,
The media will seek fresh prey.
Oh foolish icon, burning bright
In the media limelight,
What a sorry fall from grace!
And who shall now take Tiger's place?
