How many of you had expected a physical attack on America prior to 9-11 in 2001?

Because of my good education in a liberal arts college at odds with the Reagan Administration in the 1980s and my learning of earlier Cold War antics by my own government (along with our history of colonialism or neo-colonialsim), I had been anticipating an attack on the USA since the early 1980s. In fact many of us had been expecting that there would be a global war in our lifetimes (or at least a nuclear exchange). I believe that both progressives and conservatives had anticipated a chicken-comes-home-to-roost since the 1950s or 1950s.

What is your opinion? Exactly how surprised were you that a large scale attack on American soil and peoples would occur in your lifetime?

By 2000, I was pretty amazed that the there had still been no major attack on Americans.
