Were progressives who fell for Obama in 2008 foolish?
Many progressives who voted for Barack Obama in 2008 are now angry. They feel cheated and betrayed. They feel that President Obama failed to even try to live up to his promise to bring real change to Washington, D.C. But some critics of progressives say that anyone who was taken in by the campaign rhetoric from the Obama campaign was living a fantasy and deserves what they got. Anyone who was paying attention should have known that Obama was a centrist, they say. In other words, such critics say that only an uninformed or gullible voter would have believed that President Obama would pursue a progressive program. What do you think? Was there sufficient evidence available in 2008 to indicate that Obama was a centrist? And were progressive who fell for him foolish? (Voting for him might have been reasonable, but was it reasonable to fall for his promise of change?) Or is President Obama culpable for misleading people into believing that he'd bring real progressive change? Please explain your vote in the comments. I'm really curious whether the evidence was strong about Obama's centrism.
