The Taliban movement has spilled over to Pakistan as according to reports, they have established offices in several parts of tribal areas situated on Pak-Afghan border. The media reports said that they have been exerting pressure on the people of tribal areas to support them otherwise they will be punished.
According to a newspaper report, a person can escape being executed by the Taliban through registering for "jihad in Afghanistan" at the militant's recruiting office in South Waziristan, a senior tribal elder told a newspaper published from Lahore.
"You have to register yourself if you want to live. It does make a difference when you are enrolled with the Taliban," said the elder.
The Taliban think of anyone not with them as against them, so the safest course is to register with them and stay silent, he said. "Registration makes the militants believe you are with them," said the elder. Military movement is restricted and a weekly convoy brings reinforcement to Wana where elders take a huge risk by visiting the administration, said the elder. "We even fear that the militants might have bugged our phones."
Another development reports from Dir district situated near the Pak-Afghan border said a decision has been taken that anyone reporting an honour killing case (women are being killed if found involved in adultery) to the police or filing a case with the court will be killed by the jirga (tribal court) since the publicising of such cases has brought a bad name to the area, Malik Faiz Muhammad, a member of the Nihag-Wari jirga in Upper Dir, said on Friday.
A Wari police station official said that over 150 people had attended the jirga, but Malik Faiz told Daily Times that the jirga consisted of more than 4,000 people representing the entire area.
Meanwhile, according to reports from Bajaur Agency, tribal areas, the US, Afghan and Pakistan forces have been making preparation for launching an operation against the alleged terrorists hiding in the agency. The US troops have arrived in Bajaur Agency.
It is still not clear when the operation will be launched. The people of areas have extended their full cooperation to the United States and Pakistan as according to them, they are ready to hand over all the alleged terrorists to the government.
