Action Alert! Ask FL Gov Crist to veto SB 1920

Message Lesley Blackner
Yes!!! Your voices were heard - Crist vetoed SB900 last evening! But the assault goes on with SB 1920 - here is a copy of the letter I sent to the Governor today.

Dear Governor Crist,

Many thanks for your veto of SB 900. As you noted in the statement explaining your veto, the right to petition "is older than Florida's statehood--it is among the core political principles on which our Nation was founded, and thus defines us as Americans." The right to petition for redress of grievances, enshrined in the First Amendment, is at the heart of the Founding Fathers' brilliant creation we call our American democracy.

I am praying that you will also veto SB 1920, yet another assault on the right to petition. This bad bill lets shopping centers pick and choose which petitions they will allow on their premises. Because shopping malls have unfortunately replaced the town square as the place where citizens do their shopping, this bill must be vetoed. Allowing mall owners to pick and choose which petitions will be allowed on their premises is an affront to the basic right to petition. You noted in your veto that SB 900 "unnecessarily restricts" the right to petition, and it is clear that SB 1920 does the same.

I am proud and grateful that you are the "people's governor." The right to petition is a sacred right and must be protected. Accordingly, it is your duty to end to the war on petitioning and veto SB 1920.

Sincerely,
Lesley Blackner
Palm Beach County Voter
