The word "bush" is now synonymous with "hypocrisy." A House bill to add 5.1 million children to the State Children's Health Insurance Program would cost $50 billion extra over five years. Bush has said that he will veto any such bill for the benefit of kids without the means to get medical care. His reason is that he is against "government-run health care" while at the same time he and his odious family are grabbing all the free government-run health care they can get.
If we just look at the only discernible effect that Bush's Iraq war has produced, you see about 550 thousand innocent Iraqis killed, about four thousand US soldiers killed and tens of thousands wounded. By October, Bush will have spent $550 billion to accomplish this death toll. That's Bush's current Iraq Progress Report. That's about a million dollars per Iraqi killed. Bush says, ofhandedly, that it's only about, oh, about 30,000 killed. That would be about $17 million per Iraqi killed. Bush is proud of his successful program to kill Iraqis at a million or $17 million a pop, but doesn't want to spend $1000 per poor kid to finance medical care for then for the next five years.
The Democrats in congress want to cobble together some kind of program to provide medical insurance for us that still includes the insurance industry. They assure us that this has nothing to do with the fact that the insurance industry is one of the largest campaign contributors. We've heard the mantra preached at us all our lives: "You need insurance!" But, if you look at this objectively, it's easy to see that it's not true. What's the first thing you do when you need medical care? You go to a medical professional. When you're sick or hurt and bleeding, you don't need insurance, you need medical care. You don't go to an insurance company. You go to a doctor. Insurance companies have never, do not, cannot, and never will provide you with any medical care of any kind. So, why do we have them in charge of our medical care? No one seems to know.
The system we have has you, at one end of needing medical care and the provider of medical care at the other end. Right in the middle is the insurance industry whose sole purpose is to make a profit by preventing as much medical care for you as is possible by denying payment for anything they can get away with. Every dollar of your premium they can keep by preventing as much medical care for you as they can is profit for them.
It's ironic that our health care system is set up to funnel health care through companies whose business it it to prevent health care. And yet we have the highest health care costs in the world. This is called cause and effect.
It's obvious that the best way to provide medical care for all of us is to directly connect those who need medical care to those who provide medical care. How to pay for it? Everyone pays into a central agency in proportion to their income and the agency pays the medical bill. That's the exact system that's used for the most successful government program ever, the Social Security system, the one that provides a government pension for the people, the one that George Bush wants to eliminate while, guess what? George Bush will retire on the very government pension that he says he's against. And you're paying for it. Did I mention hypocrisy?
Paying for medical care for the people with the same system used to pay for Social Security sounds much too simple, and the fact is that because of it's simplicity, it is the solution to our inadequate, exorbitantly expensive health care system. It's the system that the civilized countries of the world have for their people. It's the hated universal health care program that those who have access to are dead set against the rest of us having access to. It's the program that George Bush has access to and uses, and he doesn't even have to pay for it. You do.
