Impeachment is essential for cleansing the national soul.
Without impeachment, Bush and Cheney, the greatest criminals in American history will get away with it. They will walk away scot free, having wrecked the US Constitution, with the collusion of Congress. They will walk away with billions, perhaps trillions, of American taxpayer money funneled into their pockets, via their family corporations Carlyle and Halliburton, which have benefited enormously from the Iraq boondoggle. And We the People are allowing it to continue.
Unless there is impeachment, and with it repudiation of all the evil deeds of Bush and Cheney, repudiation of the lies, the torture, the "unitary executive" restoration of monarchy,- unless there is impeachment, the great American Republic will vanish into history. Our freedom and prosperity, perhaps our ability to survive on the planet, will be lost forever. And We the People are allowing it to happen. From being a shining beacon of freedom and opportunity, we have become a rogue, outlaw country, feared and hated by the rest of the world.
We the People know this at a deep level. We are in despair. We elected Democrats to Congress in '06, and they have betrayed us over and over, playing ball with Bush and Cheney, enabling the giant war/ripoff machine. Although we protest, we continue to tolerate them. The rest of the world holds the American people responsible for the crimes of our government. Unless we impeach the criminals in the White House, international hatred against We the People will mount.
Impeachment would shine the light of truth on the secrets and lies that currently rule Washington, DC. It would re-establish justice and the rule of law, proving that we are a nation governed by laws, not by the whims of corrupt politicians. Impeachment would enable us to withdraw from Iraq in a quick and orderly manner. We then could start making amends for the havoc our government has wreaked on the unfortunate Iraqis, whose only crime is that they sit on a huge reservoir of oil. It would enable us to join the International Criminal Court (ICC), so that Bush and Cheney and their network of supporters could be tried for war crimes, a la Nuremberg. Above all, impeachment would restore the morale, the spirit of righteousness of America, which has been so rudely flushed away.
The current presidential election drama is designed to distract We the People from the need to impeach. It is meant to ensure that the criminals in the White House will escape justice, and that the next president, whoever it is, will continue the corporate/militaristic takeover of America. Anyone who has made it thus far in the presidential race has to be beholden to the powers who profit from war and fascism. So are most current members of Congress.
We must not be distracted by the media circus around the staged presidential drama. We the People must keep our eye on the ball and take Congress. Congress is the impeaching body which can limit the power of the next president. Congress is the body that holds the power of the purse and can cut off war funding. If a new president is truly to change course, toward peace and a sustainable future, he/she will need a new Congress, with different values, priorities, loyalties than the incumbents have shown.
Under the US Constitution, which has not yet been suspended, (although the president can do so at will in case of "national emergency")- under the US Constitution, We the People are the ruling entity, the "governing authorities" referred to by Paul in Romans 13. I mention this because right wing Christians are fond of quoting Romans 13 to justify submission to Bush and his cronies. They forget that Bush is a public servant of We the People, as are all other officials of this Republic under the Constitution. We the People hire them at the polls, and We the People are supposed to be able to fire them via impeachment if they transgress, usurp power, use their high office for personal gain.
We the People have less than a year to redeem ourselves by impeaching Bush and Cheney while they are still in office. The pressure for impeachment is growing, though ignored by the MSM. The best way to pressure incumbents is by mounting election challenges to Representatives who won't sign on for impeachment. My opponent, D-Mike Thompson, just signed the Wexler letter to Conyers asking that hearings on Cheney start at once. This is the first time Mike Thompson has been willing to put his name on anything regarding impeachment, and he's one of the first 15! I would like to think is responding to pressure generated by my challenge to his seat.
Failing impeachment, we need to elect a Congress that is independent of the war machine. This excludes most incumbents. We need a Congress that will join the ICC and make sure that Bush and Cheney are tried for war crimes. We need a Congress that will open an independent investigation of 9-11, with a focus on whodunit, a Congress that will rescind the executive's power to maintain foreign occupations indefinitely, a Congress that will place peace above profits for the war industries, that will place the general welfare above benefits for the very wealthy and their corporations, that will place a viable planet above short-term expediency. We need a Congress willing to impeach criminals in the White House.
Keep focusing on impeachment. It's the only way We the People can get our country and our spirit back.
