Dear George W. Bush,

I notice that you have not commented on the capture of the Christian Peacemaker team in Iraq. These four brave men, one of them American, have followed the example of their savior and yours, and put their lives on the line in order to help others. They are threatened with death by their kidnappers, an unknown Iraqi group calling itself "The sword of Allah". This group is demanding the release of all prisoners in Iraqi and American jails within Iraq. The deadline was today, but they have extended it for 48 hours.

Many Christian and Muslim groups all over the world have called for their release, as they are true peacemakers, harmless, only doing good. Your silence is resounding, a sign of the same callousness you showed toward the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

These men oppose your invasion of a sovereign country, and have done what they could to mitigate the suffering you have inflicted on the Iraqi people. They have brought aid and comfort to civilians, and collected stories of unjust arrests and torture in Iraq, some perpetrated by American forces of various sorts. I suppose this is embarassing to you. Perhaps this is why you have not made a statement.

You cannot, of course, negotiate with terrorists. You could, however, join millions of people around the world in praying for the safe release of these four men. You could assure their captors that they are not spies or secret agents, as is being claimed. You could make a good will gesture, such as offering to let the Red Cross visit all prisoners in American custody in Iraq, or promising to abide by the Geneva Conventions, as you should. There are many things you could do to show your concern.

These men are your brothers in Christ, George. You will be judged for your failure to speak and act on their behalf.

Psalm 98: 8The Lord will judge the world in righteousness
and the peoples with equity.

In the name of the Prince of Peace, Carol Wolman
