NIASA News Release
In an astonishing sequence of events, the Mars Rover Sojourner Truth
has discovered not only evidence of life, but also a message from an
ancient Martian civilization.
The Mars Rovers are nearly at the end of their productive lives, but because of this NIASA has begun to send these extra-terrestrial explorers on increasingly risky tasks they would have seldom dared at the beginning of their missions. This new strategy has produced startling results. The Rover, Sojourner Truth, has been sent into a deep crevasse on the edge of the Sea of Ares. In the process, cameras have recorded what is possibly the first evidence of life on other worlds. Although NIASA insists early findings may be mere speculation, cameras have captured what appears to be writing inscribed on stone walls at the bottom of the crevasse.
From preliminary efforts to decode these inscriptions, they are evidently a last cry for help. In a long and complex iteration of exotic symbols, the writer is apparently stating Mars once had not only an atmosphere and lakes and seas of liquid water, but an advanced industrial civilization. From the earliest attempts to decode the messages, it seems Martian Civilization was based on a fossil-fuel economy, in spite of attempts by groups concerned with perilous environmental conditions. This industrial base was maintained by vested interests that controlled government and refused to allow innovation. This same technology was deployed in massive military establishments, which dumped hundreds of thousands of tons of nuclear waste into the then-existing oceans. The combined effect of industrial civilization, fossil fuel, and nuclear waste brought about an abrupt climate change, which drained the water table and touched off a cascade of interactions that evaporated the planet’s surface and subterranean water, creating conditions leading to atmospheric breakdown and eventually, complete loss.
The writer implores those reading her message to respect life more than the local medium of exchange, and to avoid the fate of her dying civilization.
Oddly, the inscriptions indicate the vested interests of fossil-fuel industries were controlled by a family of international bankers, culminating in the reign of a boy emperor at the collapse of viable government and beginning a period of unprincipled confusion. Curiously, the family name is recorded on the stone inscriptions as a version of nightshade, a poisonous bush.
