A letter to the editor  —  11/05/2007 10:59 am

Dear Editor: Your Oct. 31 editorial compliments former Sen. John Edwards for his forthright rebuttals of Sen. Hillary Clinton's vote for the Kyl-Lieberman resolution. The editorial quotes Edwards as saying, "In fact, she voted to give George W. Bush the first step to war on Iran."

Edwards' quote may ring true. However, it's interesting to see how Edwards' language changes with the audience. Here is another Edwards quote, one recalled from the conference proceedings transcribing his appearance at the 2007 Herzliya Conference in January:

"Iran must know that the world won't back down. The recent U.N. resolution ordering Iran to halt the enrichment of uranium was not enough. We need meaningful political and economic sanctions. We have muddled along for far too long. To ensure that Iran never gets nuclear weapons, we need to keep

all

options on the table. Let me reiterate --

all

options must remain on the table."

Granted, in the weeks after Edwards softened his stance in an interview with Ezra Klein, but that too illustrates Edwards' ability to tell people what they want to hear.

If consistency of message accounts for anything, it's Rep. Dennis Kucinich who wins, not Edwards.
